Matlock sits on a dramatic bend in the River Derwent and offers good value bed and breakfast and guesthouse accommodation. Matlock Bath developed from the 1850s with the creation of the Hydro on the hill north of the River Derwent which functioned as a spa for around 100 years. Choose your B&B and enjoy the many tourist attractions that sprang up from the 1870s including show caverns, cable railways, pleasure gardens and more recently the Heights of Abraham theme park. There are amusement arcades along the main road as well as elegant Victorian villas on the hill above. The gigantic folly of Riber Castle overlooks the town, which has a good range of shops, pubs and cafes.
