Dereham, or East Dereham to give its official title, is a charming market town in central Norfolk, which retains much of its heritage, including the lively Market Place. Reputed to be named after a deer park, Dereham is said to have its origins in Saxon times. St Withburga founded a monastery here in the 7th century, reputedly after having a vision of the Virgin Mary. Despite the fires that swept the town in the 16th and 17th centuries, some of Dereham's ancient buildings survive, including Bishop Bonner's Cottage (the notorious 'Bloody Bonner' who persecuted heretics) which also houses the local history museum, and the church of St. Nicholas. Treat yourselve to a stay at one of the quaint bed and breakfast establishments this location has to offer.
