Janet and Mike offer you a warm welcome and a very comfortable stay, in this superb chocolate-box cottage in the beautiful West Sussex countryside.

Description

The Cottage is a delightful thatched cottage, believed to date back to 1587 and is widely known as it has appeared in numerous calendars, magazines, postcards and guide books.

Like many Amberley houses it was originally a farmhouse housing a Sussex yeoman and his family.

The Cottage is ‘Grade II’ listed as a building of architectural and historic interest and offers spacious accommodation for non-smokers, with modern amenities, yet retaining its old world charm and character.

Amberley is one of the picturesque show-villages of southern England and only 54 miles from London, situated at the foot of the South Downs, close to the Arun Gap and the Wildbrooks water meadows.

Local Attractions

Amberley is a lovely hodge-podge of styles, materials, periods and flower-draped walls set beneath a great wooded bluff of the South Downs more reminiscent of the Tyrol or the Highlands than of Sussex. It is a convenient halt for hikers along the prehistoric South Downs Way with welcoming pubs, a village shop and a pottery.

Across the end of a most attractive cul-de-sac, bordered by creeper-hung stone walls, is St Michael’s Church, backed in turn by the broad-shouldered remains of Amberley Castle.

The property lies close to the town of Arundel with its commanding
11th Century castle and the beautiful city of Chichester, which is dominated by the impressive cathedral and home to the internationally renowned Festival Theatre.

There are historic houses at Parham and Petworth and Roman ruins at Bignor and Fishbourne. The Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust at Arundel and the RSPB reserve at Pulborough are worth a visit.

Location

Coming from either the south or the north on the A24, look for A 283 crossroads. Take the turn west, signposted towards Amberley.
After three miles, at Storrington, watch for a left fork onto the little B2139.
Turn right off the B2139 into Amberley along School Road, then left into Church Street.
The Cottage is easy to recognise - we have our name on a sign.
