The House is a grand baronial mansion built in 1884 by Captain James Scarlett, set in the midst of 50 acres of magnificent Gardens, which were chiefly created by Col. Sir James Horlick during his ownership of Gigha.

Bed and Breakfast Description

The House has 10 bedrooms to let, with nearly all of them offering spacious and luxurious accommodation. Charles Rennie Mackintosh was a young trainee architect at the Glaswegian firm of architects that designed and built Achamore House, and there are various elements to be found here that are believed to be the work of the young Mackintosh. Certainly the rooms and halls of Achamore House are unusually light and spacious, and well-proportioned.

The gardens are famed worldwide for the rhododendrons, as well as their many rare species of trees and other shrubs. Gigha has one of the warmest climates in Scotland, and many sub-tropical plants are to be found in the gardens.

Local Attractions

The main areas of woodland to the north and south of the house were planted by William Scarlett to provide shelter from the strong winds and salt spray and game cover. When Col. Sir James Horlick acquired the estate in 1944 he wished to establish a garden to grow his more tender Rhododendrons. He managed this by cutting small clearings in the Ponticum and trees and by 1970 the garden was full and looked magnificent.

The 50 acre gardens offer a truly dazzling variation in settings, being sub-divided into over 15 differing areas. Gigha lies at the extremity of the Gulf Stream and as such has a climate of a very temperate nature. This allows species of plants and shrubs to prosper here which are very rare on the West Coast of Scotland, especially rhododendrons.

B&B Location

The House is on the Isle of Gigha in the Firth of Clyde and can be reached by ferry from Kintyre which in turn has an airport with flight from the mainland.

Nearest Airport: Campbeltown  (24  Km)
