Once described as "a stone inn at the foot of the Quantock Hills where it is rumoured that pirates off the English coast used to dispose of their loot", this building is now a small Country House Hotel set in 4 acres of parkland. It is a Grade 2 listed building, which is believed to date from the 16th century or even earlier. It was a Coaching Inn during the 17th century after which it became a coffee house and then a cider house when copper mining took place in the area. Miners collected their wages from the Counting House just to the east and came down to the Inn for refreshment.

Carol and Nigel Venner, the owners, are celebrating after being awarded the coveted 5 diamonds by the AA. This means that the grade 2 listed 16th century hotel offers ‘outstanding quality’, according to the AA inspectors who visited the hotel.

Nigel Venner says ‘Carol and I have worked hard with our staff to create a welcoming atmosphere for our guests. Our accommodation is of a high standard and our restaurant already has an excellent reputation for good, locally produced food. We are delighted that the AA has recognised our efforts, it’s a real achievement to be awarded our fifth diamond, we are thrilled’.
