The House is part Georgian, part Elizabethan, set among the antique shops in the old quarter of Barnard Castle.

Description

The House has a chequered history: a hatter's shop whose owner wasn't mad but ended up in Durham Jail, a pub that the locals nicknamed 'The Bucket of Blood' and, until recently, an antique shop.

Start the day with a fresh fruit platter, home made muesli, yoghurts, cooked breakfast with local organic produce or maybe scrambled eggs with smoked trout. For evening meals we have the oldest house in Barnard Castle next door, where Oliver Cromwell allegedly dined, a pub and Chinese restaurant across the road and a range of other pubs and restaurants within walking distance. And in an emergency we can always raid the fridge.

Local Attractions

Barnard Castle is a historic thriving market town, which developed in the protective shadow of Bernard Balliol's castle. Built on a fine defensive site in 1125, the castle is in the care of English Heritage and is open to the public.

In the town centre, the octagonal Market cross, or Butter Market, served a number of purposes, dairy produce was sold here and it was also the town's lock up, Town Hall and Court House.

Location

From just about anywhere south jump onto the M1 and drive and drive north.

Keep going until the motorway expires at Scotch Corner, near Darlington.

Here you branch off onto the great straight Roman Road of the A66.

Just after Greta Bridge, fork right off towards Barnard Castle.

Either right fork will bring you into the town from where you will easily find The Bank, quite near to the river.
