Bed and Breakfast Description

Lilac Farm, a family run guest house in Laxton, Notts, is home to the last open field farming system in the country. A warm welcome from the Rose family awaits you in this cosy, traditional farmhouse which has been awarded three stars by Visit Britain. A particular feature of Lilac farm is the beautiful display of colourful bedding plants in a variety of conventional and agricultural containers which are lovingly tended by Margaret Rose. Margaret is known to her many friends and family as a wonderful traditional farmhouse cook and her guests enjoy the benefits of many years' experience preparing breakfasts to set you up for the day!

We have two double rooms and a family room which can be opened up to join one of the double rooms, sleeping up to six people. One room has an en suite toilet and all have wash hand basins, colour TV and tea / coffee making facilities.

During your stay you will have easy access to walks in the open fields in which to work up an appetite for your evening meal. The widely renowned Dovecote Inn is just short walk from our door. Guided walks can be arranged for your party at most times of the farming year if requested at the time of booking.

Newark Attractions

Laxton is situated in the north of Nottinghamshire, close to the A1, but its agricultural system functions according to the rules of a system established in mediaeval times. The three open fields are composed of strips worked by the farmers of the village, tenants of the Crown Estate, under the jurisdiction of the Court Leet and Jury. This is the last legally constituted manorial court in the country which retains the powers to determine legal proceedings and levy fines. It ensures that the three year crop rotation continues and that the farmers maintain the boundaries of their strips as they always have.

Lilac Farm is situated just a short walk from The Dovecote Inn. This is a dining pub with an excellent reputation for its food as well as the Cask Marque for it's real ales. It is a favourite haunt of locals and visitors alike and we recommend it to our guests without hesitation. The Dovecote Inn offers a wide variety of dishes on its regular menu and ever-changing specials board. It does get booked up, especially at weekends and holiday times and guests wishing to eat there are strongly recommended to book in advance.

We are equally conveniently situated for guests travelling on the Nottinghamshire section of the A1 who need to break a long journey or for those who are visiting Robin Hood country for a longer stay. Our tranquil rural location within easy reach of excellent transport links make this a perfect place to stay when visiting the Newark Showground and nearby Swinderby - an antique collector’s paradise, staging world famous Antiques Fairs several times a year - historic Newark on Trent, Southwell Minster, Lincoln or Nottingham.

B&B Location

From the A1 North:
Travel down the A1 until you reach the Markham Moor junction. Major road works have recently been completed, creating a new flyover and slip roads instead of an island and sat nav systems may not recognise them yet.

Leave the A1 at the junction signed to Lincoln (A57), Retford and East Markham. This comes directly after you pass a Little Chef restaurant with an unmistakable saddle shaped roof.

At the first roundabout at the top of the slip road, take the fourth turning signed Ollerton taking you across the bridge over the A1 to a second roundabout. At this roundabout follow the first exit, again signed Ollerton. The road turns to the left as you leave the roundabout and takes you up a hill through the hamlet of Sibthorpe past the Mussel and Crab restaurant on your right.

You will pass Tuxford Windmill to your left on the top of the hill. Continue into Tuxford, which takes you up between the shops. As the road bends to the left towards Lincoln there is a crossroads. Go straight ahead here and turn immediately right between the Newcastle Inn and the Sun public house. This is signposted 'Egmanton'.

Follow the road for about 2.5 miles. It will take you first into Egmanton, turning right as you pass the church in the village and passing The Olde Plough public house on your right. Stay on the main road through the village and up the hill towards Laxton. At the top of this hill there is an S bend followed by a right angled bend to the right. Immediately after this bend you pass the Laxton village sign. In about 50 yards the road forks.

Take the right hand fork, going straight on passing the church on your left and the village shop on your right. Lilac Farm is approximately 100 metres beyond the shop.
