Bed and Breakfast Description

This tastefully converted farmhouse sits at one end of what is arguably, one of the county's most picturesque, historic and well known villages, Fotheringhay. Alongside Castle Farm is the mound of Fotheringhay castle where Richard III was born in 1452 and the ill fated Mary Queen of Scots spent her last days when she was imprisoned and finally executed in 1587. Close by is the picturesque town of Oundle and Peterborough Station is only 15 minutes away by car.

As you walk into the spacious family kitchen at Castle Farm Guest House you are struck by the abundance of typical farmhouse features, such as the exposed stone wall and old wooden beams (possibly relocated from the Castle itself). The handcrafted oak kitchen units and Aga type cooker add to the rustic charm, and usual presence of one or more of the family emphasise that this is indeed a much ‘lived-in’ situation.

Leading through to the hall and stairs en route to three of our bedrooms, one passes the guest sitting room with its wonderful view of the garden and River Nene. There are a further two bedrooms converted from the old “Applestore” and a ground floor room in the “Coalhouse”. These two have their own external entrance which can create a feeling of slightly more independence for a family or small group of friends.

Peterborough Attractions

Ideally located for easy access to main routes and a peaceful and relaxing escape at the end of the day. The location offers private fishing from the garden and many opportunities are available within a short distance. The surrounding area is also ideal for walking, cycling and sailing at nearby Rutland Water.

There can be few counties in England with quite such a fascinating past as Northamptonshire, let alone one with so many historic houses, fine churches and monuments. To the north and east lies Rockingham Forest, once annexed by William the Conqueror as his personal hunting ground and still with large tracts of woodland. It is excellent touring country, dotted with unspoilt pretty stone villages and the attractions of Rockingham Castle, Thomas Tresham's follies, Kirby Hall and the ancient market towns of Oundle and Stamford to name but a few.

Here, as with elsewhere in the county, water is a special feature of the quiet rolling countryside and the rivers, canals, lakes and reservoirs will keep many a fisherman and birdwatcher happy. Ramblers, golfers and horse riders are also well catered for. In the south and west you'll find other hidden treasures such as Althrop, Cannons Ashby, Stoke Bruerne Canal Museum and Sulgrave Manor. These, together with a variety of gardens, animal parks, antique, craft and farm shops, pubs and restaurants provide a thoroughly relaxing and richly rewarding holiday experience.
