Bed and Breakfast Description

An eighteenth century former rectory to the chrurch in Corwen, half a mile away, Plas Derwen (which translates as Oak Hall in Welsh) is a grade II listed building situation in the western end of the scenic and historic Dee Valley. Set within five acres of secluded garden and rolling fields, with magnificent views over the River Dee and valley, Plas Derwen offers a friendly, peaceful and tranquil setting.

The Oak Room overlooking the garden with its ancient oaks and Dee Valley beyond, is elegantly furnished and spacious. Having a double and single bed with the option of an extra single bed makes an ideal family room.

The Laburnum Room is also large and elegently furnished. This room overlooks the garden and orchard with hills beyond. It has a double and single bed and can be used as a family room, double or twin. The Laburnum Room is situated opposite the Oak room and together, being the only rooms on that side of the house can make an ideal suite of rooms for families or friends travelling together.

The Wisteria Room features a king size bed and antique furniture (right). The purple, sweet smelling wisteria frames the georgian windows which looks out across the garden and Dee Valley beyond.

The grounds of Plas Derwen include fields, dry stone walls, mature gardens, woodlands and orchards. Being on an elevated position we have magnificent views over the River Dee and beyond. The ancient oaks provide shade for long hot lazy days relaxing in one of our hammocks or enjoying a glass of cool wine at the table under the shady umbrella.

Corwen Attractions

Corwen is ten minutes walk down the road and a very historic town. Try the delights of the various pubs; browse the interesting craft shops. For the more energetic, there is a gym, swimming pool and bowling green. Above Corwen is Caer-Drewyn, a Bronze Age hill fort. A slightly hilly walk will take you to the top and let your imagination run wild with the happenings of years gone by.

Rhug-Chapel & Llangar Church are well worth a visit. Ten minutes in the car will take you to Rhug, a little altered 17th century private chapel steeped in history. Then along the road to Llangar Church, a medieval building in an idyllic setting that holds many ancient features including extensive 15th century wall paintings.

Bala is twenty minutes drive from Plas Derwen. Enjoy a picnic by the lake watching the boats sailing by or visit the many interesting shops in this small Welsh village. Perhaps take a journey alongside the lake on the small narrow gauge railway. The Welsh Language is spoken perhaps more in Bala than other villages.

Llangollen can be reached by train or car. The train journey from Carrog station in not to be missed, taking you back in time. The old stream train will chug its way alongside the River Dee taking in the beautiful scenery. Arrive at Llangollen and take in the varied delights that it offers: a canal journey, riverside walks and antique shops. Make sure you do not miss a visit to one of the most complete Cistercian abbeys in Wales. Valle Criucis Abbey is both beautiful and fascinating, founded in the 13th century in settings that will take your breath away.
