Bed and Breakfast Description

Set in one of the most picturesque areas of South Wales (between Abergavenny and Usk itself) the Old Rectory is on the very edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park and is surrounded by rolling hills, trickling streams and deeply forested valleys.

A substantial family house steeped in history and full of lovely period touches, in the Old Rectory we like to think we offer our guests a warm and welcoming home away from home with just a touch of distinction. Whether you are looking for somewhere to stay for just one night, a weekend break or an extended touring holiday of Wales, we look forward to welcoming you.

The oak-beamed, doubled bedded guest room at the Old Rectory is simply but tastefully furnished and extremely comfortable, with its own private bathroom. The room features wireless broadband and a colour TV in addition to tea and coffee making facilities, and a DVD player and digital radio can be provided if required. Young children can be accommodated in their own, separate room if required, and travel cots can also be provided.

Breakfast is served in the wood-panelled dining room which leads on to the guests drawing room and looks out onto the meadow and the River Usk beyond. If you would prefer to have your breakfast out on the patio or in the light and airy kitchen/conservatory you would be more than welcome, as long as you don't mind a friendly labrador padding around and getting under your feet! The Old Rectory also has a cosy drawing room available only to our guests, with a roaring log fire to relax by after the sun has sunk below the Welsh hills. A CD player and wired broadband connection are on hand for those who require them, and a colour TV can be provided if required.

Abergavenny Attractions

Folly Farm (Kilgetty)- farm animal and exotic creature displays, an enormous indoor funfair with every vintage ride imaginable, a HUGE indoor play area with super slides, netted overhead platforms, themed play areas and refreshment stands, multiple outdoor adventure playground areas featuring a go-karting circuit, working mini-JCBs with cranes, wooden pirate ships, shows, children's activities, entertainment - the list goes on and on. Awarded 'Top Day Out in Wales 2005' by the Welsh Tourist Board.

Black Mountains Falconry Centre (Abergavenny) - Flying displays featuring more than 50 birds of prey from all over the World (eagles, falcons, hawks, buzzards, owls and many, many more). There is also an Animal Pet Corner, where the kids can cuddle goats, the Shetland pony, Guinea pigs, etc.

Big Pit National Coal Museum (Blaenafon) - Big Pit is a real coal mine and one of Britain's leading mining museums. In addition to the exhibition there is an exciting multi-media tour of a modern coal mine (complete with virtual miner) and a World-famous real underground tour that goes 300 feet underground (with a real miner!). Experience what life was like for the thousands of men who worked at the coal face. An exciting and informative family day out and a real must on your visit to Wales.

Caldicot Castle and Country Park (Caldicot) - Children will love exploring the mediaeval towers of Caldicot whilst the adults take in the breath-taking views over the parklands and surrounding area from the battlements of this, one of Wales' best kept secrets. Lovingly restored to much of its original condition, Caldicot is exceptionally well cared-for by its present owners, who have now opened it to the public. A beautiful setting amid tranquil gardens and a wooded country park, with plenty for the the kids to do all year round.

B&B Location

FROM THE SOUTH:
Leave the M4 at Junction 24 (signposted to Newport & Monmouth) and exit the roundabout heading North on the A449. Exit the dual carriageway left onto the A472 (signposted for Usk) and shortly after entering the town turn right at the 'Three Salmons' hotel, (signposted to Abergavenny). Follow this winding road (the B4598) - through the small villages of Chain Bridge (you cross the River Usk here) and Llanvair Kilgeddin - for approximately 6 miles until you come a T-junction (just after ‘The Charthouse’ restaurant on your right). Turn left here (signposted for Abergavenny and the B4598).

Continue straight on towards Abergavenny and you will come into the small village of Penpergwm which consists of a few houses on the left and right and ‘The King of Prussia’ Pub on your left. Very soon after this you will see a sign to The Bryn to your left. Turn left (you will notice the road crosses over the A40 here) and then turn immediately left again on the other side of the road bridge. Keep on this narrowing lane (passing a red telephone kiosk on your left), drive carefully through the village, and at the foot of the hill follow the bend round to the right and facing you at the end of the lane you should see a large flower arrangement, with Rectory Farm and a private road to your right. Bear LEFT here, passing the gates to St Cadoc's Church on your right, and the next turning on your right is The Old Rectory. You cannot go any further due to a five-barred gate providing access into the meadow, sheep, and eventually, The River Usk!
