Bed and Breakfast Description

You get the best of both worlds when you stay at Lakenham. Lakenham offers all modern facilities yet successfully retains it’s charming Victorian character. Tastefully furnished with period furniture, paintings and antiquities, Lakenham was featured on BBC’s Antique Inspectors with Eric Knowles in 1997.

Lakenham was designed by the architect WR Bryden of Buxton. Bryden designed many buildings in the town including the addition of a theatre at the Pavilion Gardens (The Paxton Suite) in 1889. Bryden took his vernacular revival designs into a pair of large semidetached houses, ‘Lakenham’ and ‘Inglethorpe’ at the end of Burlington Road featuring half-timbered gables and crenellated ground floor bays. Lakenham became his own residence in 1898. Bryden went on to design many more houses in Buxton for various wealthy Stockbrokers, Manchester Metal Dealers and textile Merchants along with Flour Millers Robert McDougal and Arthur McDougal.

The bedrooms at Lakenham are all spacious, light and maintained to the highest standard with several rooms overlooking the beautiful Pavilion Gardens. We have 4 double rooms and 3 family rooms which can also be let as double or twin rooms. All have en-suite or private bathrooms and are provided with hospitality trays and satellite tv. We pride ourselves on providing a hearty breakfast with one guest describing our poached eggs as 'the best ever.'

Buxton Attractions

A gentle stroll through the Pavilion Gardens brings you to Buxton's town Centre with it’s famous Georgian Crescent, world renowned Opera House and a host of amenities including shopping in Spring Gardens Cavendish Arcade, Old Court House Shops and the traditional Open Market which is held in the Town Square on Saturdays.

A Spa town since Roman times, Buxton has many attractive features, notably the famous Georgian Crescent, the recently restored Edwardian Opera House designed by Frank Matcham, the Parkland and Conservatory of the Pavilion Gardens, the warm Spa water swimming pool, not to mention Golf Courses. The many beauty spots of the Peak District National Park lie within a few minutes drive and the countryside is tremendously varied, including large expanses of heather moorland, green wooded dales, caves and spectacular underground caverns.

Stately Homes abound in this beautiful part of the world; notable Chatsworth House, Haddon Hall and Lyme Hall. Nature trails provide opportunities for trekking, cycling and walking. There are numerous shows, fairs and festivals in and around Buxton including the Wells Dressing (a charming Derbyshire custom), the Buxton International Music Festival, the International Gilbert & Sullivan Festival, Jazz Festivals, Antique and Collectibles fairs and Craft fairs. Alton Towers Theme Park and Gardens are within an hours drive.
