Bed and Breakfast Description

The tearooms at West Winds offer home-cooked specialities that combine Yorkshire tradition with local, seasonal, organic and Fairtrade ingredients wherever possible. The variety of meals, snacks and refreshments on offer means that West Winds is no ordinary tearoom, but a restaurant, coffee shop and cafe too. It's the ideal place for eating out in the Yorkshire Dales, on special occasions or just as you're passing by...

West Winds is not just the perfect place for food and drink in Upper Wharfedale. We offer homely bed and breakfast accommodation with a distinct Dales flavour. There's so much beautiful countryside and classic Yorkshire Dales scenery to explore around Buckden and Upper Wharfedale that West Winds can provide a great base for a long weekend or short break, but our position on the Dales Way, Inn Way and Lady Anne Clifford Way also makes the location just right for a one-night B&B stop.

But staying at West Winds is more than just a bed for the night. When you arrive, we provide a welcoming pot of tea and home-made cake in our tearooms and in your room you’ll find fresh flowers, a complimentary box of Yorkshire-made Whitaker’s chocolates and a help-yourself bowl of organic fruit. In-season we can offer High Tea or Early Dinner in the tearooms (open Wednesday to Sunday between March and October; last orders 6pm) and if it’s a fine evening you can sit out in the tea-garden, take a stroll down by the river or try Dales beers in the Buck Inn.

Skipton Attractions

Buckden is small, peaceful and timeless. The cluster of stone cottages around the 18th century former manor of Buckden House is divided by the quick flowing waters of the village beck, which cascades down from Buckden Pike. At the top of the village, you can follow the beck up into the rocky and steep-sided Ghyll, where a series of waterfalls encourage even the most energetic of walkers to linger. At the foot of Buckden snakes the broader River Wharfe, along which runs the Dales Way long-distance footpath. At the centre of the village is the Buck Inn and there is also a general provisions store – where you can buy a daily newspaper and essential food items – an art gallery and a small licensed restaurant. The nearby Hubberholme Church forms the final resting place of author JB Priestley.

There are many comfortable pubs nearby serving Yorkshire beers and evening meals and where you can sit by the fire and even play dominoes. The Buck Inn is right here on our doorstep but also try the White Lion at Cray (good beer in a cosy bar; try the bullhook challenge), the George at Hubberholme (popular with local farmers and scene of the historic land letting ritual in January each year), the Fox and Hounds in Starbotton (with tables outside where you can watch the rest of the world go by), the Queen’s Head in Litton (which brews its own beer) and the Falcon at Arncliffe (a unique experience with beer from enamel jugs and an old fashioned interior unchanged for many decades; check first for food though). In fact, it’s hard to find a disappointing pub in the Dales, particularly if you like good beer and old fashioned charm.

B&B Location

We are in a quiet location in Buckden, off the main road (B6265/B6160 from Skipton to Aysgarth), tucked away up the lane beside the Buck Inn.

Buses run to Buckden from Skipton railway and bus stations via Grassington daily (not Sundays or Bank Holidays) (No. 72, Pride of the Dales) or from Ilkley railway station (No. 74, Pride of the Dales).

On Sundays, you can catch the DalesBus 874 from Ilkley, Bolton Abbey or Grassington direct to Buckden.

In summer there are sometimes buses connecting with the Settle-Carlisle Railway at Ribblehead Station that take you to Buckden via Hawes and Aysgarth.

Nearest Railway Station: Horton-in-Ribblesdale  (9  Miles)
