Bed and Breakfast Description

If you are seeking truly special hotel accommodation or fine dining on Dartmoor, then look no further than the Rock Inn. This traditional English Country Inn has been offering travellers hospitality, good food and shelter since it's foundation as a coaching inn in the mid-eighteenth century. In this modern age we pride ourselves on a relaxed, friendly atmosphere, with personal service reminiscent of a bygone age.

Dining in our a la carte restaurant, like the rest of The Rock Inn, is built upon reputation. It provides an intimate, yet friendly atmosphere for your meal. The restaurant is open to all, however, please book in advance to avoid disappointment. All meals are prepared by our resident, qualified chefs who, through their culinary art, produce imaginative and varied dishes, utilising freshly caught fish, locally sourced meat and game, and locally grown produce.

The Rock Inn boasts an intimate bar area and attractive features, including brass work, oak furnishings, and welcoming log fires. Real ales are stocked including Dartmoor Best Bitter and Jail Ale brewed next to the famous Dartmoor Prison. We also offer an extensive range of wines by the glass, ports, and Malt Whiskeys.

After a day exploring the magnificent countryside you will be ready for some relaxed and comfortable surroundings. All rooms are en-suite, well appointed with quality furnishings and decor, in keeping with the historical period of the Inn. All rooms have colour television, direct dial telephone, and beverage tray. Each room is centrally heated, some have DVD players and some are equipped with a very interesting historical "mini bar" for dispensing spirits.

Newton Abbot Attractions

Haytor rock

One of the most famous landmarks in the whole of South West England and a 25 minute walk from the front door to the top of the tor. At 1,550ft it has commanding views across South Devon.
Below the rocks is the abandoned quarry pit at Haytor, which is interesting with remnants of winch gear, timber & spoil heaps and you can see parts of the granite tramway, which form part of the Templer Way.

The templer way

The Templer Way is an old granite tramway, which was built by George Templer to help transport granite from his quarries at Haytor all the way to Teignmouth, on the coast. It was opened in 1820 and, although initially very successful, it turned out to be an expensive method of transportation and gradually fell into disuse. Granite from Haytor was used in the rebuilding of London Bridge, (now in America), parts of the British Museum, and the National Gallery.

B&B Location

From the M5 south take the A38 towards Plymouth.

When on the A38 from either direction:

Turn off at the Drumbridges intersection and take the A 382 towards Bovey Tracey. Continue straight on at the first roundabout and turn 1st left at the second roundabout (B3387) towards Haytor and Widecome in the Moor.

After half a mile fork left (B3387) towards Haytor. Follow this road for approximately 2 miles - The road will narrow and finally enter the Dartmoor National Park over a cattle grid (Please observe the 40 mph speed limit on Dartmoor). Continue for a further 1 mile until you reach a grey granite building directly at the side of the road, this will be your cue to signal left. Look for an old style red telephone box in a small patch of grass, the road you require is just before this. Pass over a cattle grid then immediately turn left, signposted to the Rock Inn and Haytor Vale. Carry on down this road and follow the bend in the road to the right, The Rock Inn will be directly in front of you on your left.
