Whitby Attractions

Cross Butts is ideally located within easy reach of Whitby with its small quaint cobbled streets and picturesque houses standing on the steep slopes of the River Esk. Whitby is dominated by its magnificent cliff top Abbey and is situated along the north east coast on one of Britain's finest stretches of coastline. With its towering cliffs, safe sandy beaches, lovely bays and attractive villages the area is a Mecca for tourists. Whitby has been a historical port for more than 1,000 years and even though the shipping industry has all but gone it remains a vibrant seafarers' town today.

The narrow streets and alleys climbing down to the quayside still bustle as they have done for centuries. Today folklore and tradition are still very much part of Whitby's character in which visitors soon find themselves involved. From these centuries old streets, the well renowned 199 steps lead up to the parish church of St Mary, whose churchyard was the inspiration for Brahm Stoker's world famous novel, Dracula.

Whitby has produced its own famous sons, not least Captain James Cook, as well as the father and son whaling masters of the Scoresby family. Each year Whitby play host to performing arts, dance, music and carnivals. Two major features that form part of Whitby are the Folk Festival and Regatta. These attractions help bring in many thousand visitors and provide a welcome boost to the local economy. For the beginner there is even a small putting green to be found on Whitby's west cliff.
