Bed and Breakfast Description

Step into Northumbrian house and you are surrounded by history. The house in its current form dates from the turn of the 19th century, though parts of the house date back to the early to mid 1700s. There has been habitation on the site at least back to medieval times.

The two bedrooms available at Northumbrian House are in the grand front range of the house looking out into Berwick's most beautiful street as well as one of its oldest. The rooms are wonderfully appointed, with many original features complemented by period furniture and stylish Regency inspired drapes. Each has its own en-suite with fabulous walk in showers and luxurious accessories.

Comfort and style work with discreet technology in the rooms so that guests have access to wireless broadband, flat screen TVs which work with DVD, audio CDs, MP3 and provide freeview programmes as well as digital radio. Fairtrade teas, coffee and other drinks are available along with biscuits and the occasional home made cake.

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, so we like to give a choice of fresh, healthy and traditional options prepared to order from the finest ingredients. Have a look at what we have on offer in our menu. Local is best. Berwick-upon-Tweed is unique in having the finest food from both Northumbria and the Scottish Borders on our doorstep. We use the best of local ingredients from environmentally and ethically concerned suppliers.

Guests are welcome to use the beautiful walled gardens. This unique area is a part of the history of the house and unusually large for the backlands of the walled town. The garden is a lovely place just to sit and pass the time, but we also have a croquet lawn, table tennis table and badminton available for guests.

Berwick-upon-Tweed Attractions

Both walkers and cyclists are very welcome at Northumbrian House, and we have the facilities to match. For cyclists we have a secure vennel (a covered passageway beside the house with doors at either end) where your bikes will be dry and safe; repairs and maintenance can also be carried out here in the dry when needed. On those rare days when it rains, we have a cloakroom downstairs where clothes and boots can be dried out ready for the next day; plenty of newspaper available too!

Berwick-upon-Tweed is a magical place. The uniquely beautiful light, the confluence of the river Tweed and the sea, the varied and stunning coastline all steeped in a rich, deep history make this a very special place to be. Step outside the door and you are right in amongst it. Two minutes walk and you are on the Elizabethan walls (the only complete example in northern Europe) with a view out across the Tweed estuary to the breakers on Spittal Beach and Holy Island in the distance. Here you will find the wildlife both of the coast and the estuary beckoning you to explore further.
