Bed and Breakfast Description

If you like old cottages, a warm welcome, and good breakfasts, then leave your car behind, use the excellent public transport system and take a break at The Grey Cottage, Disley. The Grey Cottage is close to the centre of Disley village in a conservation area on Jackson’s Edge. Designated a Grade II listed building with English Heritage, and built of local gritstone, the oldest part dates back to around 1680, with a further addition about a hundred years later. Former owners of The Grey Cottage include the novelist and playwright, Allan Monkhouse, who corresponded with other famous authors of the day, including George Bernard Shaw and J B Priestley.

For over 20 years, The Grey Cottage has offered traditional accommodation to guests from distant countries, many of whom make return visits for business, family and friends. Accommodation consists of both twin and double bedrooms with tea and coffee trays and a separate shower room and W.C. Guests are invited to use the comfortable and cosy sitting room with colour TV as well as the guests’ dining room where a traditional breakfast is served to give a good start to your day. Parking is available for two cars to the rear, or on Jackson’s Edge Road, opposite white front gate.

Stockport Attractions

Disley village offers several good local pubs and excellent restaurants within a few minutes walk from The Grey Cottage. There are two banks, a post-office, several hairdressers, a chemist, and local shops selling fresh produce, including delicatessen and supermarket. There is a local doctors’ surgery and two dental surgeries.

There are plenty of things to do within easy walking distance of The Grey Cottage. Apart from Lyme Park the Peak Forest Canal runs nearby and a walk along the towpath towards Marple will reveal the spectacular Marple Flight, a series of 16 locks which drops or raises the canal by 215 feet. Following the towpath in the other direction will bring you to New Mills where you can walk and view the spectacular Torrs and the Millenium Walkway perched high above the River Goyt. Also in the Torrs can be found the Torrs Hydro Reverse Archimedean Screw.
