Bed and Breakfast Description |
| |
|
Dowtys is set in a peaceful rural position 8 miles west of Salisbury and 12 miles southwest of Stonehenge. The converted early Victorian dairy buildings have unrivalled southerly views over the Nadder valley. The buildings were converted by the owners in 2005, winning a Salisbury Civic Society Conservation Award in 2007, which cited the outstanding craftsmanship and use of natural materials.
The accommodation for guests comprises two double bedrooms and one twin bedroom, each with private facilities. Oak and Limes bedrooms are accessed off the guest’s staircase and landing. A cot is available for babies. All bedrooms have hairdryers and alarm clocks, and the bathrooms contain complimentary toiletries.
The large, sunny Sitting Room has a TV, books and magazines and a woodburner during the winter months. Sliding doors open onto the garden. There are some toys and games available for younger visitors. The Dining Room, where breakfast is served, was once the milking parlour! This oak-beamed room contains some fine antique furniture and oak flooring. The owners’ collection of books is housed in the library at one end of the room. Here guests will also find information on local attractions and places of interest. The guest entrance door opens directly into the dining room.
The owners take great pride in their south facing garden which is well sheltered by the house, and provides numerous sitting areas, with stunning views over the Nadder Valley and surrounding countryside. Guests can relax in the garden, and may be offered breakfast and tea outside on the terrace when the weather is warm enough. |

Salisbury Attractions |
| |
There are many attractions in this part of South Wiltshire that can easily be visited from Dowtys. However, you could enjoy leaving your car in the driveway and walk from the house into the wonderful woods and downland surrounding Dowtys. You can walk for miles without crossing a single road! The owners can organise guided walks to find the best wild flowers, or can give you detailed suggestions. Off-road biking is another popular activity and guests may lock up their bikes Wilton Housesecurely at Dowtys. Packed lunches can also be provided by arrangement.
Salisbury City with its magnificent 13th century Gothic Cathedral having the tallest spire in England, and an original copy of Magna Carta (1215) in the Cloisters, is only 8 miles away. There are guided tours of the Cathedral, including a trip for the adventurous – a tour inside the roof space and up 332 steps into the tower! This thriving market City also has a wide range of shops, restaurants, 2 museums, a theatre, a cinema, an open air market on Tuesdays and Saturdays and lots of pubs!
Two miles north of the city is Old Sarum the remains of a prehistoric fortress, a Norman palace, castle and cathedral. There are fine views over Salisbury from Old Sarum and history relates it is from Old Sarum that an arrow was shot to determine the site of the “new” 13th century cathedral!
Wilton, the former capital of Wessex, is our nearest town and Wilton House is open from Easter – October. A fine stately home privately owned by the Earl of Pembroke, with magnificent gardens, an adventure playground for children and a Garden Centre. The Italianate Church is also well worth a visit. Wilton has a popular Shopping Village with a wide range of shops. |
