With its two foot thick walls, central heating, log fire, Oval House is a warm winter hideaway and a cool summer country retreat all in one. No-one can tell us how it acquired its name but it is patently not ‘oval’. It traces its origins to the 17th Century when it was probably built as two or three dwellings to serve the nearby Mount Pleasant (later Downside) House. Early photographs show it with a thatched roof when it was part of the Duchy of Cornwall estate and hence the Deeds of the house show a sale between HRH The Prince of Wales (who is also the Duke of Cornwall) and Mr Fry, a copy of which is in the vistors’ bedrooms.
Probably one of the oldest buildings in the village, it has also served as a blacksmith and a post office, but is now a five-bedroom family home with pretty garden with aspects of rural Somerset farmland, Downside parkland and a vista of Downside Abbey. Marybell and Roddy Mellotte moved to Oval House in 1983 having lived in many places overseas, not least in Berlin, Hong Kong and Denmark. The family have been looking after visitors for 25 years now and have made many friends among the large number of their overseas and British visitors. They have four children, three girls and one boy, although they have now virtually flown the nest. Most popular with the visitors is Crumble, our yellow Labrador, but there is a definite no spoiling rule!
We have a twin bedded room with handbasin for which we charge £48 per night bed and breakfast and a single room for which we charge £30. The single room can have an extra bed added for which an extra charge is made and a cot is available. Each bedroom has tea/coffee making facilities, radio and television. There are some outstanding pubs and restaurants in the local area to suit all tastes and pockets. |

Bristol with its historic docks and maritime history, Bath, justifiably world-famous for its Roman baths and Abbey and its picturesque streets, Wells with its beautiful Cathedral and perhaps the most memorable medieval town and moated Palace in England, all lie within easy driving distance of Stratton-on-the-Fosse.
There are so many other unexpectedly charming and traditional nearby places to see such as Frome with its antique shops, Norton St Philip, which boasts the oldest pub in England and the historic villages of Mells, Kilmersdon and Holcombe from which originate three of the most famous nursery rhymes (Little Jack Horner, Jack & Jill and Ring o’ Roses).
Apart from Downside Abbey, the Benedictine monastery and school opposite us, there is a wealth of historical and interesting attractions, including Glastonbury, Cheddar Gorge, the Wookey Hole Caves, Longleat and Stourhead gardens. Stonehenge is also within easy reach. There are many local country walks, farm shops selling local produce, cheeses and cider, five golf courses and many good food pubs. |

Either from the M4 motorway to Radstock:
Take EXIT 18 to BATH on the A46 road. Follow signs around BATH to WELLS onto the A367. Continue on the A367 around Peasdown St. John, through and beyond RADSTOCK.
Or from the M3 motorway to Radstock:
Take EXIT 8 onto A303. Go past ANDOVER, STONEHENGE. Join A36 for Warminster and BATH. Go through or round FROME and at RADSTOCK turn left on A367. (A bit of map reading can cut off the corner by coming through Kilmersdon where "Jack and Jill went up the Hill etc"!).
...And then from Radstock...
Outside the builtup area of RADSTOCK there is a large roundabout. Stay on A367 for a further mile and enter STRATTON-ON-THE-FOSSE.
