Bed and Breakfast Description

Dating back almost one thousand years, our large family home is set within its own parkland, with en suite rooms and 10 minutes from the A1 and 20 minutes from the mainline railway. The Hall’s interior is splendidly furnished, finely decorated and marvellously unspoilt. Though still very much a family home, we cater for guests, with rooms that have been sympathetically modernized with each room having its own bathroom, television with Freeview and built in DVD player, telephone, fridge and coffee / tea facility. A small licensed honesty bar is available for guests and we have free WiFi for laptop users. Well behaved dogs are welcome. The Hall has also been featured over the years on different television dramas such as All Creatures Great and Small, Wuthering Heights and Heartbeat.

Ripon Attractions

Located centrally within North Yorkshire and within easy reach of the A1 trunk road, Thornton Watlass Hall is perfectly placed to act as a base from which to explore - from the immediate area to locations throughout the North of England.

The Falcons of Thorp Perrow is the ultimate family day out, incorporating the opportunity to learn more about birds of prey and associated wildlife, with the enjoyment of hands on experience for all the family. Combined with the beautiful and historic Thorp Perrow Arboretum, a full and spectacular day in the Yorkshire countryside is complete.

Middleham Castle (English Heritage) - Before the present castle was built in the 12th century, a Norman motte-and-bailey fortification existed at Middleham. The earthworks of this fortification survive to the south west of the existing castle. The principal building on the new site was a formidable stone keep, one of the largest in England. During its heyday in the 15th century, extensive improvements were made and it became the childhood and favourite home of Richard III.

Tennants Auctioneers - Tennants is the biggest auction house outside the M25 and is placed close to the Hall in nearby Leyburn. Winner of the BACA Award for Best Regional Auction House in 2001 and Auctioneer of the Year 2002. The purpose-built Auction Centre in Leyburn is situated in rolling Yorkshire countryside.

B&B Location

If you are arriving by car, the easiest way to find us is from the A1.

From either North or South, leave the A1 at the junction with the A684 (signposted Northallerton and Leeming Bar). Turn towards Bedale. Follow this road all the way to Bedale until you come up a hill to a staggered junction. Continue straight across the junction - signposted Masham (A6268).

As you head out of Bedale take the turning to your right signposted Middleham and Thornton Watlass (this is on a left hand bend). Keep on this road into the village. As you pass the 30mph limit you will see our gate posts on the right on a very sharp left hand bend.

The Hall is within Thornton Watlass village.

If you are travelling by train, we recommend you travel to Northallerton and get a taxi from the station - most are acquainted with Thornton Watlass.

Nearest Railway Station: Northallerton  (9.2  Miles)
