East Northamptonshire has a wealth of villages in mellowed golden limestone. Discover a haven for may kinds of wildlife including snipe, heron and even otters.

Woodnewton has retained much of its historical character. (Local pub – The White Swan).

Fotheringhay village is also a very beautiful village, with the stunning Church standing statuesquely in the centre of the village. It is best known as the site where Mary, Queen of Scots was executed on 8th February 1587 at the age of 44. Hosts a very smart pub and restaurant by the name of The Falcon.

OUNDLE – famous for its boarding school – both nationally and internationally, plus numerous facilities – lovely old buildings, a Farmers Market and Barnwell Country Park for picnics and walking.

STAMFORD – hosts to the famous Burghley Horse Trials. A superb local town, absolutely full of historic houses and churches. Stamford has a market every Friday, has a multitude of shops and visitor centres, a cinema and of course Burghley House itself, which is open most of the year for visitors including The Orangery for lunches throughout the year. Stamford is also well known for The George Hotel which still provides superb food throughout the year – try its Garden Room for a pleasant evening meal after a days shopping.

BURGHLEY HOUSE – is the largest and grandest of the first Elizabethan Ages, it was built between 1555 and 1587 by William Cecil, Treasurer to Queen Elizabeth 1. Cecil intended Burghley as his family seat. Burghley now has beautiful gardens, parkland to wander round, licensed coffee shop, and restaurant. Burghley Horse Trials usually take part during the first week of September.
