Bed and Breakfast Description |
| |
|
Glendale House was built in 1875 by Edward Fuller Sewell, an uncle of Anna Sewell, the author of the novel "Black Beauty". The House overlooks the common, where sheep graze right outside the garden gate, and during the day, the steam trains of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway can be heard as they pull into Goathland station, about a mile away. The large conservatory dining room, opens out on to the garden, and overlooks the fish pond and waterfall, and the house offers outstanding moor land views from every aspect. The house is more recently famous as Dr Ferrenby's surgery in the Yorkshire TV series, "Heartbeat".
For your stay in Goathland, all our bedrooms have: en-suite facilities, central heating, tea and coffee hospitality trays, hair dryers, heated towel rails & stunning views of Goathland. The guest lounge has an open fire, and television with over 100 Freesat digital TVchannels, 80 digital radio stations and a DVD player. The conservatory dining room was completed in April 2005, and is an ideal setting for breakfast. We're sure you'll enjoy your stay in Goathland.
It's worth noting, that no matter how busy it gets around the shops in the the village, the walks, the waterfalls, and the moors, are still as quiet as they ever were, and after 5.30pm, 365 days of the year...the whole village is quiet. |

Goathland is a small village high on the North Yorkshire Moors. It has a population of around 450 and is lucky enough to still have a village Post Office, a village school, and several village pubs.
Goathland is surrounded by open moorland, and farms. During late summer, the heather turns a vivid purple as far as the eye can see, and its honey-like smell fills the air. Sheep are free to roam in the village and on the moors, and the Goathland sees its first lambs from May onwards. The shepherd and his sheep dogs can be seen almost daily, rounding up the sheep in the village, and driving them back up onto the moors, where they turn round and make their way back into the village. There are several waterfalls around Goathland, the most well known are the Mallyan Spout, Water Ark, and Thomason Foss. There are interesting walks in virtually every direction, all of which take you through stunning scenery.
From Goathland, you can set off in just about any direction, and enjoy a pleasant walk, with beautiful countryside, and spectacular scenery. From easy walks, taking in a couple of waterfalls and a pub, to organised 24 hour marathons - the choice is yours. It is an ideal base from which to explore further afield. Whitby, Pickering, Scarborough and York are all within very easy reach. Eden Camp, Castle Howard and Flamingoland are no more than half an hour away. There are many events throughout the year, including the Wartime Weekend, the Tall Ships race, Egton Show and Castle Howard's "Proms Spectacular". Glendale House is also a good place from which to follow the Captain Cook trail, and all the places of interest, from his birth place, to Whitby (where he sailed from), are no more than 45 minutes away. These are photographs of some of the places that are within easy reach of Goathland. |
