Bed and Breakfast Description

Somerset House was built in 1882 as a 'posting' establishment, run by a John Dibble from Somerset. Small horse drawn carriages provided a local bus service, distributing passengers who arrived either by long distance carriage or later by train. Somerset House was used for accommodation and refreshment as it still is today.

Somerset House is within three minutes walk of the promenade and shops. There are many beauty spots and places of interest nearby and Grange has marvellous views over Morecambe Bay. Lake Windermere with all its leisure facilities is only 20 minutes drive away.

Grange-Over-Sands Attractions

Far from the pressure and stress of 21st century road congestion, retail parks and traffic chaos, our stone built 19th century guest house lies in the tranquil Edwardian resort of Grange over Sands, with its charming independent shops, cafes, fragrant gardens. Stay here and step into a bygone age.

Here on the tip of the Cartmel Peninsula, an elegant mile long promenade extends the length of the town and overlooks the vast sandy reaches of Morecambe bay. The piping call of the charismatic Oystercatcher reminds us that here is a sanctuary for exhausted migrant birds escaping an arctic winter. In summer the pavements and railings are festooned with displays of fine art, local photography and handicrafts.

Yesterday’s cross-bay travellers and monks returning to Cartmel’s medieval priory give way today to a new kind of pilgrim. Tinkling bells and the whirring chatter of bicycle gears announce the arrival, on that most civilised form of sustainable transport,of W2W cyclists completing the first stage of the Walney Island to Sunderland 151 mile cycle route. They will rest overnight here, and tomorrow, refreshed, they will climb the Pennines by Kirkby Stephen and Tan Hill.

Walkers, picking their way through the cowslips and purple orchid traverse the wooded slopes of the 727 ft. Hampsfell. In a deafening chorus of birdsong , they rise above the town to be further rewarded by a summit panorama of mountains, from the ‘rosy-fingered’ eastern dawn to a golden sunset behind the western fells.
