Bed and Breakfast Description

The Porch House, located in the centre of Bishop’s Castle, dates from 1564 and is described by English Heritage as “One of the most important and sumptuous houses in the town”.

Spacious comfortable rooms with original oak beams and floors. Each room has a super-king double or king-sized double bed which may be converted to twin beds if required. Each en-suite room has a sitting area with sofa or chairs, a colour TV, books and magazines and a comprehensive What to Do folder. A basket of speciality teas is on the landing table. Tea and coffee making facilities and a small fridge with fresh milk, chilled drinking water and mineral water. Please let us know if you prefer soya milk.

We provide a full Shropshire breakfast and we can also make packed lunches if required, although we recommend The Happy Bap for the best sandwiches in town.

Bed and breakfast guests have a private parking space, and there is also a barn for storage should you wish to bring your cycles. Guests are welcome to sit out in the sheltered garden and have a cup of tea and admire the views towards the Shropshire hills. If you’re lucky, Danny our cat, will drop by to say hello.

We also provide internet access.

Bishops Castle Attractions

Walking and Cycling

Being right in the centre of an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty there is plenty of scope for those who enjoy walking. There are a number of walks which start from Bishop’s Castle, you can download leaflets which describe the best here. We will be happy to advise on local walks. The annual Tandem Triathlon in July is a big event in town.

The bc ring - a newly inaugurated 61 mile, five day walk which is centered on Bishop’s Castle. We can arrange pick-up and drop-off each day so you don’t have to carry all your gear.

Stiperstones - A spectacular rock outcrop on a long ridge, less well known than The Long Mynd but much more interesting. There are some old lead mines and quarries along the western edge of the Stiperstones (Tankerville, Bog & Snailbeach) which are also worth a visit, as is the Bog Centre for teas. Open Mar - Oct, Weds - Sun.

Long Mynd - Very popular in summer, great views and if the weather is good you can also watch the gliders and paragliders taking off over the edge of the escarpment.

Offa’s Dyke - The Dyke passes about 3 miles from Bishop’s Castle, some excellent scenery but a lot of up and down.

Bury Ditches - A spectacular Hill Fort about 3 miles from the town. It has a number of well laid out paths around the fort.

Mitchell’s Fold & Corndon Hill - Mitchell’s Fold is an ancient stone circle and the area around it, although less well known than the Long Mynd and Stiperstones, is well worth exploring.
