Bed and Breakfast Description

Stanner Cottage is a small attractive, traditional stone built cottage overlooking the village pond, just off Hartington's market square. We offer comfortable ensuite bed & breakfast accommodation in our recently refurbished rooms. It is believed to have been two cottages originally, forming a part of the Duke of Devonshire's Estate, dating back to the 1700's. In more recent times (1924-1936) the home of the District Nurse, for the Hartington and District Nursing Association, a trust set up to look after the needs of the poor of the parish. Stanner cottage takes its name from the "Stanner" pond to the front of the property where many springs well up from deep under ground, believed to have been used for a local water supply and washing facility.

We have a twin bedded room with charming views overlooking the village pond. We also have a double room and a very cosy room with sturdy rustic bunks. Each room has tea and coffee making facilities, colour TV and Radio Alarm. All of our rooms are en suite. Wherever possible we use locally produced, organic or fairtrade food for our wholesome breakfasts. Please inform us when you book of any dietary requirements.

Buxton Attractions

The village of Hartington is centred around the old market square, pond and village green, with many local amenities including post office, tea rooms, general store, gift shop, pub (with a good lunch and evening menu) and of course the Hartington Cheese Shop, famous for its stilton cheese.

The English writer (and keen fisherman) Charles Cotton was born at nearby Beresford Hall and indeed there is a pub named after him in Hartington village square. It was he who introduced Issac Walton to the Peak District and co-wrote with him that famous book of all things fishy, "The Complete Angler".

Hartington is surrounded by the fantastic Derbyshire, Staffordshire and Cheshire countryside and is ideal for walkers and lovers of the outdoors. From here you can walk the Dovedale and Manifold Valleys, cycle or walk the Tissington or Manifold Trails and even explore the Staffordshire Moorlands. There are also many walks that start and end in the village. Please note we can offer a local luggage transfer for walkers and backpackers (please notify in advance).

There are many famous stately homes in the locality. Among the most famous are Haddon Hall and Chatsworth House (which also features an extremely well stocked garden centre and Farm Area complete with Adventure Playground). For the even more adventurous the famous Alton Towers is a short drive away.

The town of Buxton is well worth a visit with many buildings of note, including the Crescent and the famous Opera House. The Buxton Festival, a yearly event devoted to Opera, Music and Literature, takes place during July and there is usually something going on in the Pavilion Gardens at the weekend, be it an Antiques Fair or Farmers Market.
