Bed and Breakfast Description

Crosshill House stands at the top of the village of Laxton in Nottinghamshire looking down the main street and close to Visitor Centre and the friendly village pub, The Dovecote Inn. Laxton is famous as the last village in the country still practicing the open field strip farming system and main street through the village is much used by the farmers travelling to their strips in the three open fields.

Although the original part of the house is 200 years old the whole building has been refurbished and offers every modern comfort. It is not immediately apparent that the left hand section of this building is so old as the original bricks were in a poor state, making it necessary to put a reclaimed brick skin right around it when it was extended and refurbished. There is a comfortable guest lounge with a roaring log burner to warm the winter visitor and large, colourful gardens to help our guests unwind. Breakfast is cooked on the Aga and served in the light airy dining room.

We have five rooms for letting to our guests. They are named after the four historic open fields of Laxton and the view of the Church. All rooms are comfortably furnished and have their own en-suite facilities as well as refreshments, colour TV with Freeview etc. Roberta was struggling with the best names to give to her rooms when a friend, who happens to be a Trustee of the Visitor Centre and Chairman of the Village Hall committee came up with the inspiration to name them after the original four great open fields of Laxton. By happy coincidence they all face towards the fields after which they are named.

Newark Attractions

Laxton itself is a popular destination for visitors interested in the history of the village, which is the last example in the country of a working three field strip farming system. Laxton's Court Leet is the last such court in the country which retains the jurisdiction to hear and determine legal proceedings. Laxton is also home to the best preserved motte and bailey castle in Nottinghamshire which is only a short walk from Crosshill House and most people can manage the walk up to the earth works, if not the climb to the top of the castle mound itself.

The Laxton Visitor Centre is opposite Crosshill House, within the grounds of The Dovecote Inn. It is open every day and visitors can purchase literature and maps for three different walks, browse the interpretation boards, or view the introductory film about the village for a slot metre charge of £2. Anyone wanting a guided walk can arrange this in advance through us or directly with a local guide.

Just outside Laxton on the road to Ollerton is Beth Shalom, the Holocaust Centre. This is also open to visitors. Only three miles from Crosshill House in the opposite direction is Tuxford Windmill, a working mill where you can take a guided tour, purchase flour from the mill and enjoy a delicious tea with Fari's fabulous home made cakes. If you like home made cakes and cream teas, Ollerton Watermill, which is only a short drive in the opposite direction and open during the summer months is a 'must', having won the 'Best Tea Place' award in 2006. Booking advised here.

Crosshill House is situated 12 miles from the market town of Newark with its Civil War history. There you can view the castle and also enjoy a trip on the River Trent. Also nearby is Southwell, the home of the bramley apple, with its famous Minster, all weather race course and the best preserved example of a workhouse in the country. This is in the keeping of the National Trust and is open to visitors.
