Bed and Breakfast Description

 

In 2004 Chris and Sandra Hales acquired the 17th Century barn and cattle sheds which were originally part of the Duke of Norfolk estate. These buildings have been uniquely converted to provide bed and breakfast accommodation around a private cobbled courtyard. Each room is individually styled and takes its form from the original features of the structure. The accommodation is designed to be wheelchair friendly, with flat level access to all rooms and a ramp to the barn.

Room 1 has a double bed. A separate adjoining room, equipped with a bistro table and chairs, overlooks the Arun Valley with an uninterrupted view of Arundel Castle. Outside is a patio and garden. Room 2 is a bright, spacious east facing room which offers either twin single beds or a super-king size double bed. Room 3 has a double bed. Room 4 offers detached, self-contained accommodation which overlooks the Arun Valley. It has a double bedroom, a lounge / diner and a shower room with vanity unit. The lounge has a sofa bed, coffee table and dining suite. In addition there is a kitchenette with built in fridge and microwave, thus offering a self- catering facility for longer stay visitors. Double aspect glazed doors open from the lounge on to a patio. We offer all visitors the use of the guest patio areas overlooking the valley.

 

Arundel Attractions

 
The locality is best known for its walking, particularly the South Downs Way, hiking and rambling and the surrounding countryside is also popular with cyclists and horse riders. The George and Dragon Pub is a short walk from The Thatched Barn, down Splash Farm Lane passing the pretty thatched Thomas Cottage and Splash Farm at the bottom of the lane. The pub can be found opposite St Mary’s Church and is a local attraction for starting and ending walks in the beautiful Sussex countryside. The town of Arundel with its castle, antique and gift shops, tea rooms and restaurants and shops, Swanbourne lake and the Wildlife Wetlands Trust are all a short distance away.

The coastal towns of Littlehampton and Bognor Regis provide some of the best seaside and beaches in Sussex with windsurfing and kite surfing available from the beach. The long awaited East Beach Cafe opened in Littlehampton in June 2007. The nearby City of Chichester with its cathedral, shops and the world renowned Chichester Festival Theatre provide a perfect day or evening out. Yachting and boating can be enjoyed on the River Arun and at Littlehampton, with the Chichester Yacht marina for the larger vessels. Seasonal boat hire and trips on the river Arun are available near to the town bridge in Arundel. Other highlights in the locality are Glorious Goodwood Races, Fontwell Park Racing, the Goodwood Festival of Speed, the Goodwood Revival, Arundel Gallery Trail and the Arundel Festival.

Directions: Travelling west on the A27
Just before Arundel railway station on the left, take the right hand turning signposted Warningcamp and Burpham. Follow the road for 3 miles, past the crossroads at Warningcamp and continue as it rises from the lower meadows. The Thatched barn and adjacent cottage and buildings can be seen in the distance. As you enter Wepham with the village signpost on your right, drive past the thatched cottage and immediately enter the Thatched Barn courtyard through the five bar gate way on your left.

Directions: Travelling east on the A27
Stay on the A27 by-pass, keeping the town of Arundel on your left and then pass the railway station on your right. Immediately after the station and the hump back bridge over the railway line take the left hand turning signposted Warningcamp and Burpham (then follow directions above).

By Train
Arundel station is on the main London to South Coast route. A taxi service operates from the station courtyard.
