Bed and Breakfast Description

Jenny and Stuart Anderson provide a warm welcome at Rhian Guest House. We offer first class accommodation and superb breakfasts featuring home-grown and local produce with our own free-range eggs when available, in a wonderful atmosphere. It was formerly a gamekeepers cottage and is set in 20 acres of private grounds where peace, quiet and comfort are assured. Rooms are centrally heated and equipped with hospitality tray, hairdryer, alarm clock radio, wardrobe, extra blankets and guest information folders. As we have a TV lounge, we don't have TV in the bedrooms. Our centrally heated conservatory provides comfortable bird watching facilities, a quiet place for reading while (on winter nights at least) watching the Northern Lights and shooting stars. You will find books, DVDs and videos in the lounge; and books, board games and playing cards in the conservatory, just in case the weather should not be conducive to outdoor activities.

Unlike a lot of B&Bs, we don't insist on you leaving the house during the day; if you prefer to relax here with a book, a coffee and the view, then you are very welcome to do so.

Tongue Attractions

The cottage nestles at the foot of Ben Loyal and the two guest lounges provide panoramic views of this Queen of Scottish Mountains. Tongue is in the heart of Mackay country and is situated on the North Coast of the beautiful Scottish Highlands; midway between Cape Wrath and John O'Groats, and also between the challenging golf links at Durness and Reay. Ben Hope (Scotland's most northerly Munro) is nearby, and the spectacular hill-climb up Ben Loyal (2,700ft) starts just 5 minutes away.

Bird and wildlife watchers are also well catered for and need not travel far from Rhian to enjoy their hobby. Buzzards, pheasant, curlews, owls, goldcrests, cuckoos, wrens and many others are regularly seen (or heard) from and in our gardens. Red, roe and muntjac deer, otters and pine-martens have also been spotted nearby. The Rhian burn (on our boundary) can be fished for trout, and river and loch fishing permits may be arranged locally. Other activities available in the area include horse riding on idyllic beaches, ceilidh dancing classes, photographic safaris, swimming pool and leisure centre, island boat trips, craft shops, Strathnaver Museum (Clan Mackay room) and historical walks to trace the Clearances.

B&B Location

We are situated slightly less than a mile from the village centre. Pass the post office on your left and continue on the single track road past the "No speed limit" sign, round a right hand bend, over the Rhian burn and turn right at our sign. Cross the cattle grid and drive up the track to the cottage. Please take care and watch out for our horses, goats, sheep, hens and dogs.

We also have helicopter landing facilities - but please mind the sheep!
