Bed and Breakfast Description

Ford House was originally built in 1864 as a Victorian sporting hostelry. It has recently been renovated and converted, and today is a 3 star guest house. Located in the small village of Ford, at the southern end of Loch Awe, and a couple of miles north of Kilmartin Glen.

We offer comfortable bed & breakfast accommodation, warm and friendly hospitality and great food all year round. Most of our rooms are either en-suite or have a private bathroom and all are very spacious. The extremely large family suite is made up of two separate but adjoining rooms sharing their own bathroom and private hallway; it takes 5 people with the possibility of adding an extra bed for a child or 'small' adult! All rooms have tea & coffee making facilities and most also have colour TV.

Our breakfasts are always prepared with the best quality ingredients: we use free range eggs and butter, organic yoghurt and Scottish sausages. Delicious locally smoked kippers are also usually available, but to avoid disappointment do mention at the time of booking. A full vegetarian breakfast is also available, and for this we provide Linda McCartney's tasty sausages (none other will do!). If you have any other special dietary requirements please ask, we will do our utmost to accommodate you.

Argyll Attractions

Ford House is located in the village of Ford: this is an area of Argyll rich in prehistoric sites and scenic landscapes.

Kilmartin Glen is possibly one of the most important Neolithic centers in Europe: it would be impossible to list here all of the sites (it is said there are about 300 archaeological sites in this area!) but the following should not be missed:
Museum of Ancient Culture, Kilmartin
Dunadd Fort
Temple Wood stone circle

The nature reserve of Moine Mhòr is a birdwatchers paradise! This ancient bog is home to hen harriers, curlews, whinchats, stonechats and warblers, as well as roe deer and otters. Nether Largie cairns and standing stones.

Kilmartin Glen is delimited along its southern edge by the blue ribbon of the Crinan Canal. At Crinan itself the scenery is at its most beautiful, with the colourful canal basin and magnificent view across Loch Crinan and the Sound of Jura. Knapdale Forest, extending immediately south of Crinan and the canal, provides some of the finest walking routes in Argyll.

North East of Ford lies Loch Awe 'country'. At 25 miles long, Loch Awe is Scotland's longest inland loch and probably the most famous for fishing. The surrounding forests and glens are excellent for walking and wildlife spotting: deer, red squirrels, woodpeckers and ospreys are commonly seen. If you're lucky you may even catch a glimpse of an eagle or a capercaillie!

From Glasgow follow directions to Dumbarton and Loch Lomond along the A82 until you reach Tarbet. Stay on that road as it turns westwards and becomes the A83 and follow it to Lochgilphead. On the way you will drive through well known places such as Arrochar, the 'Rest And Be Thankful' Pass and Inveraray. From Lochgilphead, take the A816 Oban road to Kilmartin: about 1 mile after Kilmartin take a right turn onto the B840 signposted Ford. After approximately 2 ½ miles Ford House is on the left at the junction.

From Oban follow the A816 southwards as it makes its way along Loch Feochan and Loch Melfort, through Kilmelford and Arduaine. After approximately 28 miles, and about 1 mile before Kilmartin take a left turn onto the B840 signposted Ford. After approximately 2 ½ miles Ford House is on the left at the junction.

From Campbeltown take the A83 road northwards to Tarbert and Lochgilphead. A couple of miles after Ardrishaig, just before entering Lochgilphead you will come to a mini-roundabout: drive straight across onto the A816 Oban road to Kilmartin. About 1 mile after Kilmartin take a right turn onto the B840 signposted Ford. After approximately 2 ½ miles Ford House is on the left at the junction.
