Bed and Breakfast Description

Whether you like to stay in style or sleep under the stars, Graig Wen is an inspirational, back to nature experience. Choose from our beautiful Bed and Breakfast accommodation, comfortable holiday cottages, camp site or yurts.

We believe our Bed and Breakfast accommodation offers some of the best views in Wales, if not the world! Judge for yourself, as you enjoy an excellent breakfast watching the tidal ebb and flow. Or have a drink on the terrace and catch the sun setting over the Mawddach Estuary and hills of Snowdonia National Park.

Our guest accommodation features five en suite guest bedrooms sleeping up to 10 people, quality food sourced from very local producers for breakfast and communal evening meals (by prior arrangement), double or twin beds with warm Welsh rugs, original works by local artists and bespoke furniture made from locally sourced and reclaimed timber and slate, TVs/DVD players and Fairtrade tea and coffee in rooms, free WiFi access, large lounge with eclectic books guides and music and DVDs, ground floor double ensuite for guests with special access requirements, whole B & B / site hire available for special celebrations.

Get together for an informal evening meal with other guests around the refectory-style table in what we call the ‘Caban'. Here, Welsh quarry workers would traditionally have met for meals, music and conversation. We like to think we are bringing back a bit of relaxed caban culture to this former Victorian slate cutting mill.

You can still see the stone incline which used to transport slate from the mill down to the wharf below. Graig Wen means “white rock” – a reference to the quartz seams found in the slate and the gleaming rocks you might find around the site.

Well behaved dogs are welcome.

Please note: our Bed and Breakfast accommodation is now closed until mid March 2009 while we dust down our overalls and get stuck into the next phase of Graig Wen's refurbishment.

Arthog Attractions

Take a steam train up a mountain or swing through the trees on a rope adventure - Snowdonia National Park and North / Mid Wales offer all sorts of memorable experiences within easy reach of Graig Wen. Car sick? Leave the roads behind and explore on foot, bike, train or boat. Just a few minutes from Graig Wen you can go horse-riding on the beach, mountain biking at Coed-y-Brenin, fishing from the sea or Cregennan Lakes, sailing or kayaking.

Dolgellau (pronounced Dol-geth-lie) is an attractive market town 5 miles from Graig Wen. Here you'll find excellent independent shops, a monthly farmer's market (every 3rd Sunday) plus a range of both traditional and modern cafes, restaurants and pubs. Gourmets should make a date with nearby Machynlleth's Wednesday market and stylish craft shops.

Sarah and John can provide you with more information and guides about the local area. If you are interested in quirkier attractions such as Slate Modern or the rabbit village, just ask us…
