Bakewell Attractions

This is the place to spend quality time with family and friends, and if you have not been to the Peak District before, Bakewell is an ideal base from which to explore the many attractions of this beautiful area. Explore woodland and countryside walks and take in far reaching vistas. Visit stately houses, such as the most loved Chatsworth House just 3 miles away (Mr Darcy’s home in Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice) or Haddon Hall, which dates back to the 10th century, just one mile away and the setting for the BBC’s Jane Eyre.

Traditions such as well-dressings attract many visitors to quaint villages with unusual names such as Ilam, the village closest to must see Dovedale and the Manifold Valley. Eyam, the tiny village desolated by the plague in the 16th century. Pretty Ashford-in-the-Water is only a two mile drive from The Haven and a further 2 miles on is Monsal Head, with its 180 foot viaduct, forming part of the Monsal Trail.

Family fun can be found at Alton Towers and Gulliver’s Kingdom, just two of the Theme parks in this area. Lady Bower Reservoir and the Derwent Dams were the locations for “The Dam Busters” film and Carsington Water is geared for water sports and perfect for a family day out. See steam trains at Darley Dale and ride the trams at the Tramway village in Crich.

Buxton is the highest town in the Peaks and many enjoy a night out at the opera house and spa baths. The Pavilion and its Gardens are beautiful examples of Victorian architecture and landscaping.

Matlock with its magnificent river is where you will find rock climbing, balloon rides, cycle paths, cable cars and the caves at the Heights of Abraham (20 minutes away). If caves excite you, Castleton is the location for Treak Cliff Caverns and Blue John mines. Whilst there why not take a challenging hike up Mam Tor also known as the shivering mountain or simply enjoy good company, in one of the many friendly pubs.
