Bed and Breakfast Description

Polraen is a charming 18th century country house hotel nestling in the beautiful Looe River Valley in South East Cornwall. Here, you can enjoy a country house holiday, combining quality bed and breakfast with optional evening dinner in fully licensed premises. With free onsite parking and easy level access, it's the perfect touring base - an ideal peaceful alternative to staying in the heart of the historic fishing port & seaside town of Looe, less than 2 miles away, reached in 5 mins by car or the Looe Valley Train.

Guests of all ages warm to the friendly atmosphere and informal relaxed style of operation, which so admirably suits the fine old stone house and its lovely garden. Built as a coaching inn around 1740, the house retains the charm of a bygone era with window seats and shutters and an old range. Double, twin and flexible family rooms are tastefully decorated each in individual style, with modern ensuite facilities and contemporary comforts.

Known for attentive service and high standards of comfort and hospitality, our family run hotel has been recognised in the AA Landlady of the Year Award and receives both 'Good Breakfast' and 'Dinner Awards' from the AA. Delicious home cooking emphasises the use of locally sourced produce, with fish and seafood a speciality. Special diets can be catered for.

Double, Twin and Family rooms are all en-suite, with modern shower or bathrooms, thermostatically controlled radiators, remote control colour TV, hair dryers and hospitality tray with beverage-making facilities. Free Wi-Fi access is available throughout the hotel. Superior rooms are available offering kingsize beds and either a garden view or a full size bathroom rather than shower room. Polraen is a non smoking establishment.

Local Attractions

LOOE - Visitors return to the historic port of Looe year after year because it offers something special to so many visitors of all ages. Quaint streets, safe sandy beaches, rock pools, deep-sea/shark or fly fishing, diving, sailing, boating, golf, and much more. Or the simple things in life - the pleasure of eating a Cornish pasty, catching crabs on the quay-side or watching the returning fishing fleet unload their catch.

Looe has acquired world wide fame as the centre for shark angling in Britain. Boats may be chartered for this and mackerel and bottom fishing. Martin has had much success bass fishing and is an experienced fly fisherman so he can share a few stories and tips on good locations for both saltwater and flyfishing in the area.

A range of boat and canoe trips is available in both the Looe and Fowey River estuaries from up river, or to points along the coastline. In particular, a great day out is to be had on the ex RNLI Lifeboat, William Cantrell Ashley, a Liverpool class lifeboat in service 1950 -1969 in Clovelly North Devon. Also remember to take in a trip to St George's island - a nature reserve managed by the Cornwall Wildlife Trust, located just off the Looe coastline.

The Looe-Polperro walk on the South West Coast Path, and then beyond to Polruan and Fowey, is arguably one of the most beautiful stretches on the southern coastline. Arrive in Polperro in time for a pint at The Three pilchards or Blue Peter before strolling around the quaint harbour. For contrast, drive inland to Bodmin and Dartmoor.
And in the Looe Valley - Enjoy the lovely environment of the Looe Valley on a range of walks accessible from the Looe Valley Line train, featured in the 'Trails from the Track' Pack (which we provide for free) published by the Devon & Cornwall Rail Partnership. There is also a bird spotting guide so you can plan a great day out without the car direct from the doorstep at Polraen!!

From the West: Turn off the A38 at Dobwalls onto the B3254 to Looe. After about 4 miles, go through the village of Duloe and descend into the Looe Valley down a steep hill through woods. Mind the bends! Cross over the railway bridge past Sandplace Station and the hotel is on your left before your reach the junction with the A387.
From Looe: Take the A387 following the river. When you reach the junction with the B3254, we are right in front of you. You can't miss us.
