East Hendred - Before Henry VIII's reign East Hendred was an important centre for the wool and cloth trades. Permission was granted by the Pope in 1256 to build St. Amand's Chapel, and Hendred House where the same family have lived since 1443 was built even earlier. The South of the parish crosses the ancient Ridgeway track and passes Scutchamer Knob, the legendary burial mound of the Saxon king, Cwichelm.

Oxford - The City of Dreaming Spires, For over 800 years, it has been a home to royalty and scholars, and since the 9th century an established town. Oxford has it all from historic buildings, museums, theatres, restaurants and shops.

Newbury - The Market town of Newbury is situated on the crossroads where the M4 meets the A34, it is a bustling market town where the Kennet & Avon canal runs through the centre: it is also the home of Newbury racecourse where the Hennessy Gold Cup is run.

Wantage - The old town of Wantage is just 5 miles away. It has a market square which hosts a market every Wednesday & Saturday, there is also a museum and many inviting pubs.

Abingdon - Is said to be the oldest town in Britain, it has lots of traditional fairs throughout the year as well as the strange custom of Bun throwing, where the Mayor throws buns from the roof of the 17th century County hall to the people below. The town also boasts beautiful riverside parks and walks.

The Ridgeway - This 85 mile chalk ridge route is said to be Britain's oldest road and was used by prehistoric man.It is perfect for getting away from the hustle of daily life and can be used for long distance walks, a days outing or just a short walk.
