Buxton Attractions

Devonshire Lodge is within a few minutes walk of Buxton town centre.

We provide an ideal base for visiting the varied and beautiful countryside of the Peak District. A few minutes by car will take you into the Goyt Valley with lovely walks by the reservoirs or into the evocative ruins of Errwood Hall set amongst extensive Rhododendrons.

The Roaches offer dramatic crags to explore or you can venture into the softer wooded Dales that abound and enjoy leisurely walks by a river. If truly wild scenery is to your taste then it is there to be found on Kinder Scout though you need to be properly equipped for some of these more challenging hikes. There are endless places to discover whether on foot, by cycle or with the car.

The area has various fine country houses to visit. Lyme Hall is set in extensive parklands with a deer herd and a hall best known in recent years as the set for 'Pemberley' in the BBC production of the Jane Austen novel Pride and Prejudice.

Kedleston Hall and Hardwick Hall are splendid National Trust properties. Chatsworth House, home of the Duke of Devonshire, is of course a major attraction as is the more tranquil environment of Haddon Hall.

The area has several interesting towns and attractive villages to visit. Ashbourne with its street markets and antique shops is a half hours drive away.

Bakewell is a market town of great charm and of course known for the 'Bakewell Pudding'.

Matlock achieved fame as a spa centre and Matlock Bath has many visitor attractions including caves, a cablecar and a stunning setting by the river. The village of Tideswell has a church often called the Cathedral of the Peak on account of its grandeur and woodcarvings.

Eyam, the 'Plague Village', has a fascinating story and of course tea rooms and craft shops to visit. There is no shortage of places to visit and we will be pleased to offer our local knowledge Tourist information centres can offer further guidance.
