Bed and Breakfast Description

 

Set on the edge of the old moorland town of Moretonhampstead - Cookshayes Country Guest House offers all that is best in elegant tradition.This large mid-Victorian house stands in well tended gardens with views of the surrounding moors and countryside of the Dartmoor National Park. The gardens are there are for our guests to enjoy and in which to relax. Being in the National Park it is ideally located for access to Dartmoor and the whole of the South West.

Accommodation comprises 8 rooms, 6 of which are en suite including the delightful Four Poster room. All rooms have colour TV, hairdryers, tea & coffee facilities and seating to enjoy the wonderful views. An ironing facility is available on request.

 

Moretonhampstead Attractions

 
Walking on the Moor

The moors offers the visitor a wide range of walking activities. There are numerous short walks starting from parking just off-road, leading to beauty spots, great views and the many Tors. Information on guided walks is available on request. Finally there are an infinite combinations of walks that can be taken using the Ordnance Survey maps or the many books detailing walks in the area. The walks can take you around beautiful reservoirs, to waterfalls and over the wild and fabulous open areas of the moors.

Letterboxing

As an extension to walking Dartmoor offers a novel and intriguing activity, that of Letterboxing. Letterboxes are hidden all over the moors and the fun is in finding them. There is a great deal of information available except their exact location . Once you find them you use the stamp that is located in the letterbox and stamp your map or Letterbox Record as proof.

Archaeology

As an activity on its own or as part of a walk, Dartmoor offers some excellent archaeological sites, especially Bronze Age settlements, such as that at Grimspound. In addition there are stone rows and circles, cairns and cists.

We have many guidebooks detailing places to visit and these include castles, country parks, lots of children’s attractions, potteries and of course places to eat the best cream teas.

Devon is at the bottom of the M5 which turns into the A38. Follow the A38 towards Plymouth and turn off onto the A382 to Bovey Tracey and Moretonhampstead. Once on this road continue past Bovey Tracy and follow the signs for Moretonhampstead. As you come into Moreton’ turn left onto the B3212 signposted Princetown. You are now in Court Street. Carry on this road for 400 yards (metres) and you will find us on the left.
