The cottage dates from the 17th century and from 1720 was home to the rector of Birchanger the Reverend Joseph Spence who was Oxford Professor of Poetry and a close friend of Alexander Pope. It is a Listed Building in two acres of mature gardens overlooking fields and woods.
The comfortable reception rooms are oak panelled and full of character, the larger of the two sitting rooms has a wood-burning stove.
Breakfast is served in the conservatory-style dining room, facing east over the lawns and yew hedges, which can be bathed in sunshine during breakfast.
We do our very best to ensure that everyone is comfortably accommodated and made most welcome. The cottageis to be found in the village of Birchanger which lies between a large ancient wood and the farmland of the peaceful Stort Valley.
It is a quiet village despite its proximity to Stansted Airport, M11 and Bishop's Stortford.
A friendly bed and breakfast guest house with 14 bedrooms ranging from single, double and twin en-suite and only a short journey time of 10 minutes makes it ideal Stansted Airport accommodation.
The guest rooms are furnished in a traditional cottage style and have: en-suite shower, basin, w.c., colour TV, Wi-Fi, tea/coffee facilities, radio alarm clock, room controlled heating and tourist information.
There is a wide choice for breakfast including fresh coffee and home-made marmalade. Continental Breakfast can be served on request for early risers. Public Payphone; Car Parking - ample and private; Gardens with patio, seats and a woodland walk.
Although we do not serve evening meals there is a highly rated Pub (The Three Willows - Closed Sunday Evening), which is recommended by the 'Good Pub Guide', just a 10 minute walk away in the village and a wide range of restaurants in nearby Bishop's Stortford. |
