Bed and Breakfast Description

Chipley Farm is the home of Fred and Louisa Westcott and we have three rooms for the use of our guests.

FAMILY ROOM
This beautiful room can take up to three children and has a canopied four-poster bed. Its milk white walls and solid oak flooring give it a relaxing, sophisticated look and the views over the garden and surrounding Devon countryside are a major attraction. Patio doors open onto a private terrace where you can sit under a wisteria covered pergola and enjoy the amazing views, listen to the birds, and perhaps share a drink or a light lunch.. The spacious ensuite bathroom has a large shower.

DOUBLE ROOM

Decorated in shades of green and softest apricot, this is a very pretty room and enjoys the same spectacular views as the family room. It has its own basin set into an antique pine washstand, and is furnished with pine furniture. It has a table which holds the tea tray, TV., and a collection of holiday ideas. The bathroom is shared by the double room which is adjacent and we find these two bedrooms are ideal for the family with older children or for friends holidaying.

TWIN ROOM

This room looks out onto the front garden and a beautiful white flowering magnolia tree. Wisteria blossom and spring camelias enchant and delight and there is the added bonus of a sheltered patio area full of flowers in an assortment of lovely pots.

BATHROOMS

The double and twin rooms have the use of both a conventional bathroom and a bathroom with a large shower. Please note that these rooms are not ensuite.

Local Attractions

Chipley Farm is the site of volcanic activity over 360 million years ago. From the peak of the volcano you can see the awe-inspiring Tors of Dartmoor in one direction and the sparkling waters of the English Channel in another. Universities bring their students regularly to see the famous pillow lava formed as a volvano erupted on the floor of a deep ocean and the molten rocks forced their way up through deep waters to form our lovely Devon hills. This site is of special scientific interest recognised as being of national importance for our geological heritage.

Although these hot air balloons carry travellers of the more familiar sort, do ask about our famous Corn Circles. These roused extreme interest from scientists as far away as both Canada and Russia and for a short period Chipley Farm was the centre of much extra-terrestial excitement.

Fred is a farmer and Louisa an artist and their home is at Chipley Farm in sunny Devon. Fred cares for the farm and Louisa cares for the many visitors who arrive as guests and leave as friends. We have a 4 star grading with the AA and have been awarded a major hospitality award for the warmth of our welcome and our attention to every detail. You can see from our guest comments how many return again and again.

B&B Location

FROM EXETER DIRECTION

At the end of the M5 continue South along the A38 for about 2 miles. When the road forks take the right hand fork signposted PLYMOUTH.

Stay on this road until you reach a sliproad for NEWTON ABBOT/BOVEY TRACEY.

Leave the A38 here and at the roundabout take the third exit for BICKINGTON.

Continue until you reach a pub called THE WELCOME STRANGER.

Take the second left past this pub and immediately after the road sign to BICKINGTON, then right, left, and fork left. At this stage the back of your vehicle should be facing the church gate. Follow a pretty country lane past a traditional Dutch barn and we are the first house on the right.

FROM PLYMOUTH DIRECTION

Take the A38 towards EXETER. Leave at NEWTON ABBOT junction and continue until you reach a pub called the Dartmoor Halfway House.

Take first LEFT after this (Bone Mill Cross with red telephone kiosk), cross over a little bridge, and follow the stone wall uphill to the left.

We are the second house on the left.

FROM NEWTON ABBOT

Take the A383 out of Newton Abbot and continue out of town on the Ashburton Road. Drive past the golf course and the splayed entrance of what used to be our agricultural college.

Look for the third turning on your right past this entrance. It will have a red telephone kiosk on the left and a barn conversion on the right with some caravans. TURN RIGHT here and cross a little bridge. You will now see our white house with a balcony ahead of you.

Follow the lane uphill to the left and we are the second house on the left.
If you happen to reach a pub called The Dartmoor Halfway House, you will have gone a little too far on the main road.
