Bed and Breakfast Description

We believe Penvith Barns is in the forefront of a revolution in the way Bed and Breakfast businesses are run. We offer quality en-suite bedrooms that have been finished and equiped to the highest standard, decorated in sympathy with the Barns and their surroundings. If you fancy an evening in, we have a large dvd library available for you to help yourself. There is no question of curfew times or any such nonsense. Once you have checked in, you will have a front door key and can come and go as you please.

I love planning my breakfast menu’s every day, using locally produced ingredients wherever possible, choosing whatever is delicious and in season. My “Full Cornish” is always available along with another savoury dish for those of you with a smaller appetite. If like me you need a sugar hit to get you started – there is always the sweet option and I love trying out new muffin recipes or fruit dishes that I haven’t made before. I bake fresh bread rolls every morning and if you are a caffeine junkie there is even cappuccino and espresso coffee on the list. And breakfast is a great time to compare notes with other guests, to find out what is happening, and to make sure you really get the most out of this fabulous part of the world. I’m always ready to help you to make the most of your stay.

Penvith Barns were built in the 19th Century, on a much older site. We discovered one amazing historical feature when we changed the old laundry room in the spring of 2004. Through a new plate glass floor you can see the walls forming part of a 13th Century wheel-pit. Down there somewhere is also a tunnel used by smugglers in the 17th Century. The tunnel is yet to be excavated but it is on our “to do” list!

I have extensive grounds where you can breakfast on a hot sunny day, looking across to Looe and the sea beyond. We have prize winning, Pedigree Alpacas here, who are tame enough to hand feed, with ten babies (cria) due this summer.

Local Attractions

This is not a complete list, but it does give a flavour of what is happening around here. On sunny days, a snooze on the beach at Seaton, near the Inn on the Shore might be just what you are looking for, but if you want to return home with a few more memories then read on, or browse some of the sites below. If you have any queries, or want to make a reservation, just send me an email.

The Guardian recently said of Looe “Approach Looe across the water, over turquoise seas fit for the Caribbean. Steer clear of fishing boats bringing home the catch (for this is one of the last thriving fishing ports in the country) and head for the safe sandy family beach. Then on to the granite quay where exports of copper brought wealth to the town 100 years ago, in to the maze of lanes and alleyways flanked by medieval fisherman’s cottages, up on to the cliffs for wild flowers and staggering views or along the estuary to see the egrets nesting. You can dine in evening dress in gourmet restaurants or eat the best fish and chips in Cornwall on a seat by the harbour. But the real joy of Looe is its people; warm, open and friendly, with a real smile; a community that is resilient, hard-working and welcoming. No other place can compete.” Hilary Lade.

From Cornwall

Bypass Liskeard heading east on the A38. Turn right onto the B3252 signed towards Looe. Follow for about 3 miles then turn left onto a very narrow lane signed toward Bindown.
