Bed and Breakfast Description

Redgate Smithy is in the heart of SE Cornwall, situated just above the beautiful Golitha Falls, near St.Cleer on the southern edge of Bodmin Moor. Only three miles from Liskeard, the area is lovely for walking, birdwatching, and the natural landscapes of Bodmin Moor. The North and South Coasts are never far away.

Built around 200 years ago, Redgate Smithy now offers friendly and welcoming Bed and Breakfast guest accommodation. Watch the birds over breakfast!

We are Open all Year, and South East Cornwall is very accessible... a beautiful place to visit at any time of the year, whether it be Spring, Summer, Autumn or Winter - February and October are lovely here. We have a mild climate in Cornwall, and this means the seasons are less harsh than the rest of the country.

We have a lovely woodland garden that has two patios and other seating areas, and a large conservatory for guests to use at any time, plus comfortable beamed, and well equipped cottage style bedrooms. Here at Redgate Smithy, we aim to provide you with a relaxing atmosphere, with all our guest rooms upstairs and separated away from our own, each with Digital TV (Freeview), and tea & coffee making facilities.

We also provide folders in your room about the local area, to help make your stay even more enjoyable.

For European language speakers, see our French, Italian, German and Dutch pages. Julie speaks fluent French, and also Italian to a very good conversational standard. We have guests stay with us from many different countries, and visitors from Europe, and internationally across the world, are most welcome!

We have ample and easy-access off-road parking, and a turning area for guests’ cars.

All our beds (mattresses, duvets, pillows) are hygienically cleaned annually by Mattress Medics, who certify them as sterilized, and dust mite and allergen free. We do not use feather pillows or duvets.

Local Attractions

Redgate Hamlet

The little hamlet of Redgate nestles on a shoulder of land between the River Fowey valley, right above Golitha Falls on the north side of us, and the East Looe river valleys to the south of us. Part of the East Looe river has its source just down the lane (which you will find if you walk down our local lane, in the opposite direction from Golitha, down towards Treworrick and St.Cleer). Back in geological history, the courses of the two rivers were much different, for Redgate, whilst nestling and sheltering between hills to the east and west of us, we are also on the top of hills coming from the south and north of us! For the technically minded, we are now right on the watershed between two separate river systems, one of which captured the head-waters of the other - "river capture"! More details of this are on our History page.

"Redgate" is not an obviously Cornish name, but there have been two very old and established farms here, that the hamlet gave its name to; Higher Redgate and Lower Redgate Farms. The name is probably more in keeping with an Anglo Saxon origin, or perhaps a corruption of an original Cornish name, and is in keeping with several other "reds" found around this part of Cornwall. For a more "blood curdling" origin, see our History page again!

The lanes around Redgate are good for exploring, and are all the more pleasant if you do it on foot! The lane we are in leads down to a turning to Treworrick and St.Cleer (a very scenic little walk with two pubs, two shops, and a fine church to distract you). If you go straight on past the Treworrick turn, you will find yourself at the bottom of the valley past Lampretten, by the East Looe stream, and all points south down towards High Wood.

St.Cleer

Our local village of St.Cleer is in easy walking distance, and can be reached via a very pleasant walk down the lane and up through Treworrick and the farm; with fine views down over the upper reaches of the East Looe river valley.

B&B Location

We are situated in the small hamlet of Redgate, just to the north-west of Liskeard,
and just to the west of St.Cleer, on the Upton Cross - Doublebois road.

The drive to Redgate Smithy is pretty from any direction, whichever way you come...
either down from the A30 on the moor at Jamaica Inn; down the B3254 from Launceston; up from the wooded Fowey valley and A38 at Doublebois; or up from the A38 via Liskeard.
