Bed and Breakfast Description
|
|
The Old Manor House dates back to 1680 and is situated close to the centre of the ancient, market town of Wirksworth on the southern edge of the Peak National Park.
The house is built of Derbyshire sandstone with many of it's original features retained.
The current custodians Ivan and Sandie Spurrier-Smith have spent the last 18 years or so restoring the house to its former glory and have furnished it with period furniture, creating a very elegant home. The house stands in an acre of formal gardens, including a walled kitchen garden providing seasonal fruit and vegetables for family and friends. A large lawned area surrounds the house and gives way to a lower level of more formal period flower beds. On a warm afternoon relax in the gazebo looking back towards the main house.
At the Old Manor House you will be treated to outstanding hospitality as there is only one guest bedroom with its own superb private bathroom.
You will be invited to take tea or coffee in the Drawing room on arrival.
The sumptuously romantic décor of your room which boasts an antique four-poster bed and has views of the garden, provides the perfect choice for that special occasion. Within your room you will find your hospitality tray with many different varieties of tea and coffee.
A traditional english breakfast is served in the formal Dining room and includes a full english cooked breakfast, made to your liking, vegetarian option available, fresh seasonal fruit and yogurt. Freshly squeezed orange juice and home made bread is always on offer. Wirksworth has a selection of restaurants within easy walking distance, we will be pleased to offer recommendations and make reservations on your behalf. |

Local Attractions
|
Wirksworth is situated virtually at the centre of Derbyshire about 2 miles to the south of the Peak District National Park boundary, approximately 16 miles north of Derby. The small, ancient, market town has lots of secrets to reveal and is best explored on foot, with its intricate maze of footpaths, narrow streets and old buildings.
Visit the ancient Parish Church of St Mary which stands on a site at the junction of at least five ancient trackways. The church was one of the first centres of Christian teaching and may well have been built on the site of a prehistoric stone circle.
The Church itself dates back to about 653 and a path completely encircles the churchyard giving it a cathedral-like appearance. It contains the "Wirksworth Stone" which has been described as "an archaeological treasure".
On the first Sunday following the 8th September each year, an ancient custom of clypping can be observed, when the congregation join hands in thanksgiving, to completely encircle the church.
The Old Manor House is located just a short walk, aproximately 130 metres, from St. Mary's Church and about 200 metres from the Newly Refurbished Ecclesbourne Valley Railway. Every year at Spring Bank holiday, Wirksworth holds its annual Well Dressing ceremonies and carnival. In September the town celebrates the talents of local, national and international artists, along with performers of all descriptions, when it holds its prestigious annual festival. During the first weekend of the festival the Art and Architecture Trail takes place. When visitors can get a glimpse of properties not normally open to the public as well as viewing an array of contrasting exhibitions.
The Old Manor House is also ideally located to visit other local places of such as Chatsworth House, Haddon Hall, Kedleston Hall and Carsington Water, with it's sailing club facilities. These are all within a short drive. |
