Matlock Attractions

Wirksworth is a delightful, unspoilt old town rich in history with many old features preserved. It dates back to pre Roman times and was at one time a well established lead mining town.

The old part of the town has elegant Victorian houses, tightly packed miner's cottages amongst delightful unspoilt narrow winding streets and alleyways and wonderful views.
The town is small but lively with a Museum, Leisure Centre with pool, gym, climbing wall and other facilities including a Skate Park, Library, Post Office and an assortment of shops.

Special events include a Carnival and Well Dressing in May and the Wirksworth Festival in September. The festival is a three week treat of art, music, theatre, street theatre, workshops and other activities.

The Art and Architecture Trail, which forms part of the Festival draws people from far and wide and is a special and unique event. Local people open their houses to artists and artisans to exhibit their work to the public.

Follow the Trail at your leisure, stopping on the way for local fare. An excellent opportunity to see and purchase varied works of art in an informal and homely atmosphere and to explore the architecture of the area inside and out!

Wirksworth is close to the spa town of Matlock, to Bakewell ( famous for its Bakewell puddings) and to Chatsworth and Haddon Hall. Carsington Water, Alton Towers and the beautiful limestone Dales are within easy driving distance together with Castleton and the moorlands of the Dark Peak.

Ideal for walkers and people touring the Peak District. Excellent walks on the doorstep (some with good disabled access) and good pubs and restaurants close by. Plenty of activities for children in the vicinity.
