Bed and Breakfast Description

Mandale House is situated on the edge of Lathkill Dale in the "White Peak" area of the Peak District National Park. It is part of a working farm which has its own beef herd and sheep flock. The house lies about one and a half miles from the village of Over Haddon and three miles from the old market town of Bakewell.

Lathkill Dale is now a nature reserve managed by English Nature to protect a variety of flora and fauna as well as some outstanding geological features.

Mandale House enjoys a superbly quiet and peaceful setting but is only minutes away from the village pubs and retaurants. The cities of Sheffield, Derby, Nottingham and Manchester can all be reached within an hour.

We are fortunate enough to live amongst some of the finest unspoilt scenery in the country - the ideal base for a relaxed country holiday.

Local Attractions

Lathkill Dale

Lathkill Dale is a deep limestone gorge formed in the ice age. It has a long industrial history, including lead mining, timber production and a corn mill. All have left their mark, enhancing the beauty of the dale as we know it today. Part of the dale is now a National Nature reserve managed by English Nature to protect a variety of flora and fauna, as well as some outstanding geological features.

Arbor Low

An ancient stone circle 1,200 feet above sea level with wonderful views.

Bakewell

A bustling market town famous for its puddings. A cattle market is held weekly on Mondays in the new agricultural centre, while across the river there is a traditional open-air stall market. There is a fine Church of medieval origin and the Vernon chapel containing tombs of Sir John Manners of Haddon and his wife Dorothy Vernon. Find out about the famous elopement and othe local history from the Old House Museum situated a little way from the church. The great houses of Chatsworth, home to the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire, and Haddon Hall, the home of the Manners family, are just a few miles away.

Well dressings

An ancient custom unique to Derbyshire and its borders. It is the art of decorating springs and wells with pictures made from flowers and other plants.
