Castles and Bastles
Northumberland has more castles than any other part of England. Some are ruins but many are impressive monuments to the Border past.
In addition to castles, there are other, smaller fortifications scattered throughout the Northumberland countryside, called Peles and Bastles, which stand as romantic and often eerie reminders of the county's border past.
Peles or Pele towers are the most common. These are stone-built, oblong tower houses had walls 3 to 4 feet thick making them virtually impregnable to raiders. Peles date from thirteenth to seventeenth century.
Bastle Houses are variations on the Pele tower, but much rarer. They are fortified farm houses rather than tower houses. Found in more remot areas of the area, usually not far from the border itself.
The Scottish border towns of Hawick, Kelso, Selkirk & Galashiels are great to explore and are within an hour's travel of Kielder.
Walking & Hiking Kielder has some stunning walks to offer. Around the lake and streams, deep in the forest, up on the ridges with views almost from coast to coast. |

Directions by Vehicle
From the east of England head for Newcastle upon Tyne on the A1. You will see signs for Hexham and the A69 which you will follow until just past Hexham turning right off the dual carriageway signed towards Acomb and Chollerford A6079. Follow the road through Acomb village, Wall village and through to Chollerford where brown tourist information signs start signalling the way to 'Kielder Water and Kielder Forest'. Once at Kielder Water and you can see the dam, follow the C200 for about 8 miles to Kielder village - Station garage is clearly seen on the left. Take the next right turn into Castle Drive. 'Twenty seven' is near the end of the street on the right, opposite the Village Store.
From the west of England/south of Scotland, aim for junction 44 on the M6 by Carlisle. Turn off the M6 here and follow the A7 through Longtown. On approaching the next village of Canonbie there are brown tourist information signs marking the route through to Kielder. This route takes you through many country roads and is approximately one hour in journey time from Carlisle. Eventually you will come to Kielder village. On entering the village after passing the church on your right you will cross a small bridge, take the next left turn into Castle Drive. Twenty seven is near the end of the street on the right opposite the Village Store.
Public Transport Directions
Reaching Kielder by public transport is not straightforward. There is a daily direct service by Postbus from Hexham (via Bellingham).
At weekends during the summer, the Kielder Bus (service no. 714 Arriva) runs a morning service between the Metro Centre and Kielder village, returning late afternoon.
