Bed and Breakfast Description
|
|
Force Mill Farm dates back to 1694. Once a farm with adjoining corn and bobbin mills, it stands by the Force Beck waterfalls, about half a mile from the picturesque hamlet of Satterthwaite and around four miles down the road from famous Hawkshead.
Our Guests, new and returning, will enjoy a friendly welcome, comfortable ensuite rooms, hearty breakfasts, seasonal log fires and the security of off-road parking for five cars on the forecourt, with more parking facilities in front of the adjoining barn.
Force Mill is always peaceful, situated at the junction of two of Central Lakeland’s loveliest, least crowded locations – the beautiful, forgotten Rusland valley, and Grizedale, the Old Norse Valley of the Pigs.
All our rooms are ensuite, with colour TV, hospitality trays, clock radios and reading matter. |

Local Attractions
|
From our front door, guests can walk, cycle or horseride from the nearby Grizedale Riding Centre (see MENU Grizedale Activities) along the pleasant lanes and numerous trails over miles of rolling forest and fell. Many points offer superb views of Coniston, Langdale and the Central Lakes ranges, and there is an abundance of animal and bird life.
By way of the trails, there are walks to three lakes – Esthwaite Water, Coniston Water, and Windermere. John Ruskin’s Brantwood and Beatrix Potter’s Hilltop at Near Sawrey are not far, and a short lovely walk from our door brings you to the rocky outcrop of Rusland Church, with Arthur Ransome’s grave. Another route leads to the National Nature Reserve, Rusland Moss.
For the visitor who loves to explore off the beaten track this beautiful land will have a great and lasting appeal. Yet Grizedale and Rusland are close enough for easy access to many well-known visitor amenities and the more famous fells and mountains. Our guests are occasionally faced with only one problem: deciding what to do from the many choices available to them.
Grizedale Forest Park and Visitor Centre, two miles north of Force Mill Guest House and just south of Hawkshead, is the Forestry Commission’s leisure and amenity centre in Lakeland. The Park comprises 8,000 acres of mixed woodlands threaded through with footpaths, sculpture trails, forest tracks, bike trails and green lanes for easy walking, cycling, riding and bird watching. Go-Ape, the hugely popular treetop adventure Sculpture trails, with 70 intriguing forest sculptures by many artists.
Grizedale Riding Centre brand new stabling for 10 horses. On Bowkerstead’s horses or their own visitors can enjoy a variety of fell and woodland rides. Lessons are also available from a fully qualified BHS Riding Instructor.
Fishing at Esthwaite Water is popular, with excellent returns for both trout and coarse fish. |
