Michael and Victoria welcome you to Mill Dam Guest House, a must for accommodation in South Shields. Our guest house is built on the principles of making a stay at the riverside one to remember providing a quality and reliable service to all our visiting guests. The house itself dates back to the 1800's and bears so much space that we believe it was built for the purpose to accommodate visitors. With large grounds it has given us the opportunity to offer a private car park to all our guests that is monitored by CCTV and spacious garden for all to enjoy.
Situated next to the riverside area, not far from the mouth of the River Tyne, we offer any visiting guests pleasant and idyllic surroundings. Whether you are looking for peace and quiet, good places to eat and drink , shops to browse, entertainment for all ages, coastal walks and visits or a bit of nostalgia, Mill Dam and its surrounding areas offers it all. We are the only guest accommodation in the Riverside area.
All our rooms are finished to a high standard with contemporary co-ordinated decoration and offer comfort and facilities to suit everyone. Our disabled guests will definitely appreciate our wetroom En-suite. We really took our time to make sure this complies with the latest regulations.

Customs House is situated approximately 100 yards from our front door and offers the best in Arts, Theatre and Cinema in South Shields. It offers an impressive choice of films, shows and exhibitions, which are available to everybody. The building itself was used as the Customs Post in the mid 1800s and the most part of it is infact Grade 2 listed, so if you are a bit of an architectural buff then it is definitely worth a look.
South Shields Ferry Landing is a pleasant 100 yard stroll down from Customs House. The ferries operate a service between South Shields and North Shields across the River Tyne. They operate every half an hour and the price is £1.00 for an adult single fare and 50p for a child. Two ferries operate, "The Pride of the Tyne," and the newly appointed, "Spirit of the Tyne." Still moored alongside the ferry landing is the recently retired, "Shieldsman," who is taking a well earned rest after 30 years in service. We would strongly recommend a trip across the river on Sunday mornings where you can buy or eat fish that has literally just come out of the sea at North Shields Fish Quay.
The Riverside Area has something to offer to everyone and its on our door step! You can stroll 200 yards from our front door and find yourself right next to the riverside where you can see many comings and goings on the River Tyne. If you enjoy fishing this is an ideal spot to sit down and relax whilst trying to reel in the largest catch. If fishing is not your thing, then you can stroll along the riverside promenade and watch the," boats come in." Many large ships and tankers make their way in from the North Sea - 2007 saw the visit of the QE2 and Feb 2008 welcomed the Ark Royal, which brought many visitors to the area, we have even seen a full Rig towed in. Its always a good idea to have your camera with you. |

By Road
We are approximately 8 miles from the A1, North bound.. Pass Washington services, you will see a split in the road, follow the A194 (bear right) signs will say to South Shields/Tyne dock. Travel down for 3.7 miles until you reach a roundabout, take the second exit onto Leam Lane (A194) drive down to the next roundabout and take the second exit onto Newcastle Road (A194) continue on to next roundabout and take the second exit onto Jarrow Road (A194) at next roundabout take second exit onto (A194). Go ).2 miles and bear left on to Temple Town continue on Corstorphine Town and go 0.2 miles and then bear Right on to Commercial Road (B1302), follow the road all the way for approximately 1 mile then at roundabout turn immediate left pass the Riverside Public House continue down on cobbled road and take 2nd left - You have arrived!

If Arriving By Rail
From the Newcastle Central Station the best way to travel is via The Metro. The Metro has 59 stations serving Gateshead, Newcastle, Sunderland, North Tyneside and South Tyneside. The Metro at Central Station is located right outside the main station. To get to us you will have to travel on the metro until you reach the station,"South Shields," This is the twelveth stop and takes approximately 25 minutes from Central Station.
Once at South Shields metro station head towards South Shields Market Square (approx 200yards) cross the main road and head towards the ferry landing. From the ferry landing turn left and approximately 200 yards down the riverside you will find The Customs House, we are literally 100 yards from there situated behind a converted church.
There is a taxi rank outside the metro station should you prefer a short taxi journey.
