The Sir William Fox Hotel is located in the picturesque and historic village of Westoe in the heart of South Tyneside. This recently refurbished hotel was the birth place of Sir William Fox, three times Prime Minister of New Zealand.

The village also has ties with the historical legends of South Shields such as the famous authors Catherine Cookson, Elinor Brent Dyer, actress Dame Flora Robson and Dr Winterbottom the founder of South Shields world renowned Marine Technical College.

A jewel in the heart of South Tyneside the hotel is a beautiful listed building set in this historic village. South Shields Town Centre and the Metro link to both Newcastle and Sunderland are within a 5 minute walking distance with the hotel's location providing easy access to the motorway network north and south.

Residents can relax in the refurbished but traditional Red Room Bar whilst experiencing the views, peace and tranquillity of the village from the window seats. The hotel offers a good selection of beers wines and spirits and entertainment via wide screen digital T.V.

The Red Room Bar can also be utilised as a formal/informal function facility for corporate events, weddings and birthdays etc, free of charge subject to numbers.

The dining room provides the perfect setting for private dining with traditional home cooked food in period surroundings. Meals are available to order evenings and weekends.

Find an abundance of wildlife, hidden coves, twisting cliff top paths and cycleways and pioneering lighthouse, and at our northern extreme the mighty River Tyne.

Arbeia Roman Fort and Museum

Built in the AD 160s, this Hadrian's Wall World Heritage Site stood guard at the mouth of the River Tyne and controlled the main port of entry to the Roman Empire in Britain.Visitors can explore the Commanding Officer's House and Barrack Block and discover the reconstructed West Gate. The museum displays finds that have been excavated at Arbeia, including weapons, armour, jewellery and coins, which are amongst the most impressive found along the World Heritage Site.

Souter Lighthouse

Vist Souter Lighthouse. Operating since 1871 and at its time the most advanced in the world, explore the light house, its engine rooms and the family living quarters in the Victorian Keepers cottages. After your tour of the lighthouse climb the 76 steps to the tower to enjoy the views of the coast line from the mouth of the Tyne to the Tees.

The Customs House

Situated in a listed building overlooking the River Tyne The Customs House consists of a theatre, cinema and art gallery. Built in the 1860's and beautifully renovated a few years ago, the Customs House has a growing reputation as the focus of artistic and cultural life on South Tyneside.
