Local Attractions

We are ideallly situated on a main route into Durham, offering easy access to all local attractions including Durham Cathedral, Durham Castle and Durham University Colleges.

Durham is a city with a fascinating combining a great sense of heritage with bustling streets during the day and a lively nightlife.

The skyline has been dominated for over nine hundred years by the magnificent Norman Castle and Cathedral. Today, the Castle and Cathedral are a World Heritage Site, officially recognising their exceptional quality and character.

In 2001, Durham Cathedral was voted Britain’s favourite building by listeners to the Radio 4 ‘Today’ programme. It took only 40 years to build and was completed in 1133 to house the shrine of St Cuthbert.

Around the Cathedral a thriving town began to develop, as pilgrims flocked to the shrine of Northern England’s most revered saint. The medieval layout is still evident in the narrow cobbled streets and alley ways.

The loop of the River Wear formed a natural line of defence and the rocky peninsula provided a towering fortification for the powerful Prince Bishops. Their castle since 1836 housing the foundation college of the University of Durham remains, a combination of stronghold and palace.

There are a wide range of shops, including the recent Prince Bishops development, sensitively designed to blend in with the historic character of the city, yet containing leading high street names.

There are cafés, bistros and restaurants to suit every taste. At night Durham City has the pubs, wine bars and clubs to appeal to all ages, long into the early hours.

Away from the bustling streets, the wooded riverbanks offer pleasant walks and peaceful boat trips on the Wear.

Broom Farm Guest House is ideally located just a few minutes drive from the town centre and offers an excellent base to explore the region.
