Bed and Breakfast Description

A welcoming hotel and village Inn situated in an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in the conservation village of Ravenstonedale. Perfect for walking the Howgill fells or touring the Lakes and Yorkshire Dales, our family run hotel offers a relaxed, informal home-from-home where our guests can enjoy excellent home cooked food, wines and ales, along with great coffee and gorgeous home-made cakes and scones. The hotel is a beautiful Victorian building, built from Lakeland stone and is ideally located to enjoy local walks, relax in our lovely riverside garden, with resident red squirrels, play the nearby 9-hole Riverside golf course (loan clubs available) or enjoy a game of tennis on the village court (rackets available). Free wireless broadband access is also available in the bars and lounge.

We have recently refurbished and restored the public areas of the hotel which retain many original period features and character. Our dining rooms are beautifully decorated and are elegant, yet informal, where our guests can enjoy lunch or dinner daily. The 9 en-suite bedrooms have recently been fully refurbished in traditional fabrics with quality duvets, extra large bath towels and all the little extras to make your stay special.

All our rooms are en-suite (except one pretty room with private bathroom) and are undergoing full refurbishment to provide beautiful, traditional, individually designed and comfortable accommodation with little extras which we hope will make your stay special.

Three of our double/twin rooms are located on the ground floor and have direct access to our courtyard seating area. These rooms are suitable for disabled guests (with full disabled access to the hotel and dining areas) and can also welcome guests who would like to bring their dogs to enjoy the beautiful walks and countryside.

Kirkby Stephen Attractions

There is a wealth of activities and interests in the immediate vicinity of Ravenstonedale. Listed below are just some examples.

Ravenstonedale
The picturesque village of Ravenstonedale lies in an area of outstanding natural beauty. While the surroundings are idyllic and offer visitors peace and tranquility Ravenstonedale is an ideal location from which to explore the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales national parks.

Hill Walking
Ravenstonedale lies at the foot of the Howgill fells and offers excellent opportunities for walking. Walkers can access the hills a short distance from the Black Swan. A little further afield are the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales national parks which offer walking amid spectacular scenery.

Coast-to-Coast Walk
The Black Swan Hotel is close to the Coast-to-Coast walk. This makes it a convenient point for an overnight stay.

Smardale Nature Reserve
A short distance away, near the village of Newbiggin-on-Lune is Smardale Nature Reserve. The reserve embraces the former railway line that linked Tebay with the North East and therefore offers easy walking if desired. The countryside within the reserve is idyllic and wildlife is prolific. The reserve is only one of 2 locations in England where the rare Scotch Argus butterfly (Eribia aethiops) is found.

Newbiggin-on-Lune
Newbiggin-on-Lune is a small Cumbrian village nestling in a valley at the foot of the Howgill fells. It lies in the parish of Ravenstonedale about five miles from the market town of Kirkby Stephen. The region is classed as an area of outstanding natural beauty. Newbiggin-on-Lune lies between the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales national parks.

River fishing on the Eden, Belah and Lune
The rivers Eden and Belah are nearby for which permits are available locally from Kirkby Stephen Angling Association. Day permits are available to fish lower stretches of the Lune from Tebay Anglers.

B&B Location

The Black Swan Hotel is situated in Ravenstondale, a peaceful and unspoilt village in the upper Eden valley in Cumbria. It lies between the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales national parks. Although quiet and secluded Ravenstonedale is easily accessed from the M6 and from the A1.

From the M6

Exit the M6 at junction 38 (Tebay). Follow the A685 east towards Kirkby Stephen. After about 6 miles, shortly after passing through Newbiggin-on-Lune, Ravenstonedale is signposted to the right. Take this road which leads downhill into the village. After crossing the bridge, take the second right turn. Pass the village school on your right and keep left to find the Black Swan Hotel on your right after another 200 metres.

From the A1

ake the A66 west from Scotch corner to Brough. Turn south at Brough on the A685. Follow the A685 through Kirkby Stephen. About 4 miles past Kirkby Stephen, Ravenstonedale is signposted left. Turn left on to the minor road and left again after 200 metres. Pass the village school on your right and keep left to find the Black Swan Hotel on your right after another 200 metres.

From the Settle-Carlisle Railway

The Black Swan Hotel is situated close to the famous Settle-Carlisle railway line, popularly thought of as the most scenic railway in England, passing through stunning Cumbrian and Yorkshire scenery. Why not combine your break at the Black Swan Hotel with a trip on the line. We are happy to provide transport from the hotel to and from the nearest station at Kirkby Stephen.
