Bed and Breakfast Description

We believe that a stay away from home, in a wonderful place like the English Lake District, should offer a combination of peace and quiet with all the comforts and little luxuries that make the experience one you will remember.

The Garth is an extremely comfortable Victorian bed and breakfast, carefully restored, in Near Sawrey, one of the prettiest, unspoiled villages in the South Lakes, home to Beatrix Potter. The house sits in two acres of gardens, overlooking Grizedale and across Esthwaite to the Langdales and Coniston.

Near Sawrey is within easy reach of the best of Lakeland, and yet returning to The Garth at the end of a day, you will smell the woodsmoke, see the stars and hear the sounds of sheep and night birds – a real haven and a lovely retreat.

We believe that The Garth lends itself to relaxing in comfort without too much fuss and we hope that all our visitors feel that they can use the spacious rooms as if they are guests in a friendly country house. There is almost always a welcoming log fire in the lounge, with books, games, jigsaws – even a piano. It’s a room for enjoying, especially at night time. We encourage groups of family or friends to come and make the most of the space to be together.
There are selections of walks and cycle routes, maps of the area and local interest information to help you if you need ideas when you arrive and will happily help you with suggestions. We have visited this area for over twenty years before moving up here and have a fair idea of what is on offer.

All our rooms are en-suite and individual and have everything that we believe you need to enjoy your stay. Each room has a CD player with a selection of CDs – and more if you need them - a television with teletext, hair-dryers, teas and coffee and we always have fresh milk for you to take up to your room. The sheets are crisp and all beds have very individual bed-quilts.

Local Attractions

The Garth is right in the heart of the Lake District National Park in the pretty, unspoiled village of Near Sawrey , surrounded by National Trust land and buildings. Hill Top, Beatrix Potter’s home, is a minute’s walk away, next to an excellent pub with a very special atmosphere- low beams, warm log fire and really good, well-kept ales. The Garth is surrounded by wonderful grounds in a peaceful side lane.
For walkers, the fells and high peaks are within east reach and there is excellent walking from the door. Tarn Hows and Lake Coniston are a ten-minute drive away .

There is an abundance of visitor attractions nearby – Brantwood, the home of John Ruskin, Blackwell, the recently restored Arts and Crafts house, Dove Cottage, local trout fishing, Windermere , Hawkshead and Ambleside and then there are all the museums and children’s attractions , boats on Windermere, theatres , exhibitions – the list is almost endless.

Eating out locally is good, you have a real selection of places that range from hearty pub food to excellent cuisine. From time to time, we also cook dinner for groups of guests and the house lends itself to groups who book in together and want to enjoy the lounge and dining room in the evening.

It’s a great place to relax and be spoiled.
