Description

In an outstanding hilltop location overlooking the Irthing Valley and just 300 yards from the Hadrian's Wall National Trail at Birdoswald in Cumbria, this listed 16th century fortified farmhouse, or 'bastle', has three letting rooms. All are ensuite or with a private bathroom and there is a lounge and library for guests. With 1 acre of gardens and ample parking we provide comfort and a warm welcome for all who visit this historic and beautiful Scottish Borders area on the edge of Northumberland.

The House itself ..... An Act of Parliament in 1555 made it compulsory for everyone living in the twenty mile wide Border Zone to build their own defences against reivers and cross-border raiders. Not everyone complied but the owners of 'The Hill' did. In 1595 this 'bastle' was built and while it has all the comforts of the 21st century, its original characteristics have been tastefully retained.

'The Long Room', with its log fire and four foot thick walls is a cosy lounge for the use of guests.

The Dining Room contains a large pine table made from the wood of a 17th century mill.

Our bedrooms are named after personalities of the Roman era .... 'Hadrian's Retreat' and 'Caligula's Chamber' are large spacious rooms with superb views of The Wall.

Local Attractions

Being so close to Hadrian's Wall, The Hill on the Wall bed and breakfast attracts visitors from all over the world. Here are just a few of the multitude of interesting facts surrounding this unique World Heritage Site ....

When first built, Hadrian's Wall stretched from Wallsend-on-Tyne to Bowness-on-Solway, some 73 miles (117km).

The Wall was built by order of the great Emperor Hadrian - an order believed to have been given during his visit to Britain in AD 122.

There has been much speculation about why the Wall was built but it's generally accepted that it was not a barrier to keep anyone out (or in!), but a boundary marker of what was then the Roman Empire. Major excavation work has been carried out in recent years at a number of sites in Cumbria and Northumberland including:
Birdoswald, Vindolanda, Housesteads, Corbridge and Wallsend.

The Hill is situated in an area of outstanding natural beauty with much wildlife on display. In fact if you're lucky you may see the odd red squirrel around the property. Hadrian's Wall is an obvious 'must see' with the National Trail and visitor centres like Birdoswald Roman Fort just a short walk away. There are also other places to interest the discerning visitor such as the famous cities of Newcastle and Carlisle and the Lake District. All are an easy day trip away.
