Crook Attractions

The Greenhead is likely to appeal to visitors looking to visit the magnificent Norman Cathedral of Durham. Founded in 1093, it is one of the great architectural experiences of Europe, and together with the adjacent Castle, is a World Heritage Site.

Other attractions at Durham City include the D.L.I. Museum, the Oriental Museum, and Durham University Botanic Gardens - set in 18 acres of mature woodland with exotic trees from America and the Himalayas, there is a Tropical house, cactus house, butterflies and insects, plant sales, Prince Bishops Garden and Visitor Centre with café.

The Greenhead lies at the foot of The Durham Dales. Part of the North Pennines, it is one of England's largest Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty with waterfalls, river valleys and wildflower meadows.

Three firsts that can be experienced within easy travelling distance:

The Highest Market Town in England (Alston)
The Highest Road in England (with breathtaking views!)
The Highest Waterfall in England (High Force)

Lovers of long distance walks should check out the Weardale Way. 77 miles through the heart of Weardale.

A return via Bowes Museum, Barnard Castle, and Raby Castle will provide an excellent day out. Or for an excellent insight into some of our Industrial Heritage, visit Killhope, The North of England Lead Mining Museum.

We have a new local development in Harperley prisoner of war camp.

Shildon National Railway Museum. celebrates the birth of the Railways.

The Timothy Hackworth Railway Museum tells of his part in the creation of the Stockton & Darlington Railway.

Another day might include a visit to Beamish Museum, voted the “Best Open Air Museum in Europe”. At least six hours will be needed to fully experience working life at the turn of the century.
